FYI: FREE DivxPro!!

and get it here --> http://www.divx.com/dff/index.php

one of the best codec imho and certainly one of my favorite! I usually rip the DVDs that I have into divx for their good multi-thread support (faster encoding) & good post processing (full screen deblocking & sharpening, if your CPU can handle it).

Its worth the $20 you pay IMO. combine the divx pro codec with Dr. Divx and you have a sweet combo for converting almost anything to divx.

I prefer Xvid. Its plenty fast on todays hardware, and supports more of the mpeg-4 derivatives, not just its own like DivX. I know for the games I play, its pretty much the only codec anyone uses to encode thier Fraps videos. Or they wmv, but I cant remember the last DivX encoded file I've downloaded.

I only encode in x264 MP4 format now anyway. I still use XviD for backing up some of my TV-series DVDs (Grey's Anatomy, movies for my kid, etc.), but XviD/DivX just don't compare to me on flat screens. AAC is far superior to MP3 too, but that's a different story :]
