I want to make a HL2 mod

After watching my female friend pay $30 for a Veterinarian game, that runs on a horrible engine that looks like it was made in the 90s. I've decided I want to make a Vet game on the Soruce engine. Simply to show what a game can look like. Problem is I've never made a mod before. I've been reading up on the Source SDk docs and it seems that Valve has made it easier with all the tools, like FacePsoer and hammer (for maps).

Has anyone here ever made any mods? I don't think what I want to do with be that hard. I make a map, get some animal models, choreograph a few scense with NPCs and them bring in a particular animal. Add in some vet's tools, make them give health instead of take it, and bam have a quick alpha version ready.

I'd later like to add a whole thing with payment and money, make ti mroe indepth, but to start with am I missing any major parts? It seems to me like modding the scource engine isn't going to be extremely difficult. Any advice is always appreciated.

Also one ofther thing, if anyone has ever played any of those RP (role playing) maps in HL2: DM, do you know where I can get the soruce to those maps? They would make a good map for my mod, as I can turn one of the buildings into a Vet clinic, one into a supply shop and so on.

Have you heard of Gary's Mod?

Not sure if it will do you any good...its just an impressive kit that is designed with all of the HL2 objects.

My recomendation: try OGRE. Its slightly harder, but you get much more control and you don't need HL2.

Ok, I check the book out from the library....

Its nothing but Map Making!!! I know maps are important to a mod, but what about working with the code eh? What about a true! Mod? Not just a new map...I'm glad I didn't buy the book.

Sorry I didn't really read much of the book when I saw it in a store
Have you tried the Source SDK software available through Steam?

Yeah, I've been messing around with the SDK. I've used hammer to make maps before, but never a mod. The source SDK doc, on the valve wiki, they are good but not great. The explain some things but then not others. Its all written by the community though. Its kind of weird, valve basically hadns over thier source code with the SDK, your given a working source engine and its source files, but they don't give documentation to it. They also comment the coding pretty bad.
