Need some help oc'ing the C2D e6400 with asus commando today

Aloha all,

Today I am getting all my gear, phase cooler thing and i just got my ram from newegg

Got OCZ 4-4-4-15 Reaper (1GB x 4)

In the past of tring to OC my cpu, i was never able to go over 370 without the system hanging on re-start.

a bunch of you said go strait to 400 fsb, when i do that with my current ram, system wont show post screen.

I left cpu volts to auto and the ram to auto is there something i am missing?

anyone? I tried 400x8 however, bios just says OC Fail, press F1 to go into the bios. I am running at 300 right now prime95 stable 25c load temp, how the heck do you get past 300+ without erroring out. If i put in 301, i get OC fail, 320 , OC fail... All the time i am leaving DDR to auto and Volts for the CPU to auto...

Try setting your ram to it's rated voltage. (2.2v?) Also try manually setting your CPU voltage. For 3.2ghz, ~1.35v should be enough.

sometimes 4 sticks require slightly looser timings and/or more volts.

OK,

I had to take 2 sticks of the ram out because the system wouldnt overclock with 4gb in it for some reason.

Anyways, right now i am at 360x8 2.8Ghz almost 2.9 . Problem now is i have been using the auto for the CPU vcore and when i try to do 365x8 the system hangs.... hard to get into the bios...

What should I do now? I dont know what is a good vcore to start with, can i just pick an amount 1.35? or should i pick something higher 1.4 or so?

also, I am going by the temps from the motherboard monitor. I am guessing its not very accurate is it?

I can touch the Coolit CPU block and its cold, but yet the bios says 60c

My Core2 is a Conroe btw if that matters.

Let me know when you all think..

Jump straight to 400x8. There is an FSB wall at around 360fsb.

Ok, i hear what your saying. I have the following:

365x8 so far prime95 stable gets hot tho 66c , not sure if thats safe for the core2

I set the volts to 1.400,

are you saying I should do 400x8 at 1.300 vcore?

I just want to make sure as i am not sure where the sweet spot will be for the volts on this thing.

I don't have an Asus so I can't help with specific instructions but I will say that, unfortunately, there are no magic numbers in overclocking. Many people are able to achieve 3.0Ghz @ 1.4v or lower but that isn't a guarantee that you'll be able to. You're best bet would be to try to find what vcore the MB is delivering now (maybe on a System Monitoring page in the BIOS) and then give the Vcore a little bump over that. Your first concern however and what you need to address before doing any more overclocking is the BIOS CPU Temperature reading. 60C is far too high for idle. I would check to be sure that you hsf is properly seated as a first step.

I'm not sure what the vdroop is like on that board but I'd set like 1.35v in bios maybe another notch up.

what is the best way to tell what the real temps are? Reason why i ask is, the waterblock is cold to the touch, but yet the bios says its 50c , but when i reach in there its cold or very cool to the touch....

I don't know your MB well enough or your tec but... It could be that the BIOS is loading the CPU for monitoring or that the block wasn't properly applied (air bubbles in the TIM for example) or that the BIOS is simply inaccurate for whatever reason. What are your overclocked idle and load temps in windows and what software are you measuring with?
