Hi, im going to upgrade soon, i was gonna grab an e2140 intel however the speed isn't as good as these X2 unless i OC it alot and i dont want to OC to much... are these any good ? i cant afford anymore than the 3800+ so any comments, if i get this processor i will be getting the abit AN-M2. and (2*512mb PC6400 RAM)

thanks

While both are great chips, I would personally go for the Intel because right now Intel just flat out has better CPUs

which intel chip ? would the e2140 out perform this ?

I built a system for my sis.

P5B, kingmax mars PC800 and a 2160 and it does 2.7 on 1.2V undervolted, it goes as high as 3.3 if I push it.

So I also wonder what can I get myself to smoke it.

Santa Ana, 6000+ Windsor, brisbane ?

If you want an X2 3800, they arent bad at all - but you will need to overclock the hell out of it to make it a worthwhile purchase, close to 3.0Ghz which is easy, even doable on air

What would it perform like OC'd to about 2.6ish ? I don't want to OC too far.. and i dont think i'd OC at all to start with until i get a decent PSU as im on a brandless 350watt **** bucket...

OK, well i didn't mention this but in August i start work (thats good and bad, means i have to pay board :( ) and therefore i will be upgrading some more better processor more ram, PSU GFX card etc.... (not nessicerilly in that order) so i want to go for a socket that i can upgrade on. I know i can upgrade with Socket AM2 and 775 however which would be best for me the AMD AM2 route, starting with the 3800+ or going the Intel Socket 775 route starting with an e2140 ?

If i go amd route i will get a Abit AN-M2 Mobo

If i go Intel route i will get the Gigabyte GA-965GM -S2

I will get 1gb of PC6400 ram whichever route i go... i will be using onboard gfx for a month or 2.. as well as my s**t psu i have atm until i have some money... (PSU will be the first thing i change)

Check this can find most available processors in the list compared with quite a lot of apps.
Thanks for that, unfortunatly the e2140 or e2160 isn't on ther but its helps to see where the 3800 X2 performs against the C2D's and the other amd's etc...

Edit: Wow, the 3800+ X2 comes up on top for price/performance index

I am searching answers as well for which platform has more future.
Want to get a Small form factor PC and it is not like just throwing away a mobo.

As I see it K10 65 nm will work on AM2 if you get an AM2+ in august september that might last even in 2009.

Not so sure about Intel but Imo same goes for it, if you get one of the new soon to be released mobos those are 45 nm penryn compatible.

Here is a review about the 21X0 cpus. LINK
Generally speaking on the same clockspeed they are 0-10% slower than 2MB cache C2D add the 3.3G average OC to it and you can see why are those chips recommended even by Anand.

This is a review about todays cpus from Pirce/performance point of view, E21X0 still not included but as I see it wold come out as a winner or very close to the 3600+ but has better OC potential.

hmm, thats a great article ronaldo, ive got to decide now whether i need bettr gaming performance or application performance, with the e2160 OC'd at 3.6ghz it beats the x6800 look:

*snip*
almost there :p
I don't think that the thing even has a E4300.... That chart needs an update like NOW...

I would rather get some 800Mhz ram and you do not need ECC at all.

About the cpu if you do not mind the price difference the 4xxx will be a few % faster and they OC about the same.

I would rather get a cheaper cpu and get a silent PSU asap, a zalman 450 is under 100USD.

I saw noname PSU explode even with bartons.
