Laptop problem

My buddy came to me and asked me to look at his laptop. First off, it's an ebay laptop. There is no tech support. Second off, the CDROM is dead. He was able to load a fresh copy of XP before the CDROM crapped out on him. He says he doesn't need the CDROM to work anyway, just needs the internet and printing (USB). He also doesn't have any drivers whatsoever. So the driver CD option was out. I made copies on my external harddrive but wasn't able to install the software on the laptop because the USB drivers weren't found. I would need to load them off of the windows CD. How can I go about this without having to buy a new harddrive for the laptop? Is there any way?

Since when did XP not come with USB support fresh?

Solutions:
Take laptop hd out, plug into another computer, copy stuff to it. If it's a SATA it'll work just like a SATA desktop drive, if it's PATA then you'll need a special adapter...

Lend a cdrom from another laptop. Laptop cdroms are pretty much standard, each company just makes a different casing/adapter/caddy. So just switch the caddy/adapter and it fits.

No other laptops with the CDROM configuration. The HDD won't work because its a laptop HDD and not a deskop one...

Um... is there a reason you can't install needed drivers off an internet downloaded file or through a network from another machine?

I had this happen once to me on a laptop. I think that the USB started working once I installed some drivers (probably motherboard or chipset).

But the given solution would work. Put the drive in a external enclosure, get one of the adapters, and connect it to a working desktop. Then save all of the drivers to a folder on the drive, put it back in the laptop, and install them.

Thats what I would suggest. Or if you can't find them to DL take the ones you have now and upload them to a webserver.

He said a clean copy of XP fresh installed.. he may not be able to use the network card w/o the driver..unless he can find and use one that winxp provided..and the laptops mobo drivers may need to be installed for USB to work..WInXP should automatically use USB devices such as flash drives with out any drivers....mobo maybe dead or it needs the USB drivers lol

Buy a $10 adapter and plug in that laptop HDD to your computer and put the files on there
