Vista 64-bit Home Premium OEM gaming impressions (i.e. Buy it!)

I was skeptical about getting Vista at all, installing a new OS brings back the BSOD days of the all new XP and it's plethora of unsupported drivers, or even the older Windows 95 SE days as well. Ug. Hellish days then.

I knew I wanted Vista to support the new games that will run DX10, even thought some/most will still support DX9, I still wanted to take the plunge, and on a PC I briefly had for 30 days which had Vista on it, it ran great, so I kinda new what I was getting into beforehand.

But I am glad I bought it! It took all of my components and installed them perfectly without a hitch. Coupled with 4gb's of ram, the 8800 GTS 640, the GA-P35-DS3R and my OC'd E6420 @ 3.2ghz, gaming has never been better/beautiful. I get to run everything at MAX settings without a loss of framerates (averaging ~50-55 fps) with Oblivion (HDR over antialiasing), Call of Juarez, COD2, Penumbra, FarCry, S.T.A.L.K.E.R.

I don't know why anyone complains about Vista not being able to play games smoothly, especially 64-bit, unless they have older components or something, not enough memory, etc.

But I'm here to report that it runs great and the only BSOD's I've had are during Orthos stress runs when my voltage has been too low.

Other than that - Vista is flawless and runs great, stable and fast.

Glad we can add another happy user of Vista on the forums. I too don't see what everyones bad vibs about Vista is. I've had a few quirks in the OS over the past 9 months but nothing horrible (2 random reboots and 1 BOD) 2 of which I caused.

Its nice to see more nVidia users liking it as well since the drivers for Vista haven't been top notch on that side of the graphic cards.

I use VIsta Ultimate 64 bit in the PC as well in my sig, and I have had no issues with any of the games that I play. I play BF2, BF2142, Raven Shield, and a few others, all without any problems so far. I know Vista is a resource hog compared to XP however if you have 2 gigs of ram or more it's a moot point. The graphics drivers are also starting to get better for Vista which helps a lot.

If you have the hardware to run vista, its way better than xp, imo.

running OEM Vista HP x64 here on a 939 Athlon X2 64bit 4200+ with no problems at all.. happily playing NFS Carbon, FEAR, HL2, HL2 DM all run very nicely.
I have 2gbs ram and had a spare 1gb usb stick so stuck that in with it all set for ready boost.. can't tell you if I notice any difference tho really.
All in all I much prefer it to 64bit XP and had no issues at all once I installed two drivers (ATI and soundcard) actually aside from my wifi card but just took it out and moved my router.. my desktop isn't exactly portable anyways and it's right next to a phone socket..
