QX6850 Review and OC

Quote:
It took a small voltage bump to 1.45V in the BIOS to hit 3.73GHz. To achieve this, we raised the FSB to 466MHz and dropped the multiplier to X8. Once we hit our highest, stable clock speed, we were surprised how stable things were even with a relatively low cost standard HSF cooler. We used an Artic Cooling Freezer 7 to achieve these results. Temperatures under full load were getting a little toasty though, at 69°C. With more exotic cooling, or water, the QX6850 most likely would top out even faster. That said, even with a stock retail heatsink and fan assembly, 3.4 - 3.6GHz is most likely a walk in the park for many QX6850 chips. Is Intel holding back? Probably, because they can.

Very sick chip, the one I saw did 4G on 1.55, 4G 4 cores is insane.

The question is, what for ?

SETI or folding. I think SETI can run 4WUs at once on a quad core.

Nice. But nearly 70c is a little toasty for my taste.

Got one..

Right now and am in the process of tuning it for max OC. It'll be four core folding 24/7 very soon.

Working on it, with the summer heat I'm down from 16-17kppd to ~12kppd. (When the quad is online) I've got the main rig idle now on folding while I tweak it.

NOOB QUESTION ALERT

Can my p5b-deluxe run one of these? I'm behind the times.

This is where I reach into my back pocket, find my wallet, and realize I don't have enough money for this.

Nice processor though.

Ok I think I get it. All the new stuff will be GO stepping, I just can't use the ones that end with 50, right?

Will the G0 Q6600 perform almost as good then knowing what the G0 stepping is doing for the extreme?

It should although thats assuming Intel doesn't start binning the best chips for the top processors QX6850 and E6850. I expect the Q6600 to OC slightly less than the top chips due to this but that is just my guess. Hopefully I am wrong. In any case the g0 should be better than B3. Of course the luck of the draw will also play a role even like always.

Yep, aggreed based on history and statistically.
