Boy gets £44,000 in eBay parcel

Police are trying to trace the owner of 65,400 euros (£44,000) mistakenly sent to a 16-year-old boy who bought a Playstation Two for £95 on eBay. The cash arrived in a box at the house in Aylsham, Norfolk, with the games console, but minus two games.
Police are holding the money under the Proceeds of Crime Act while the matter is investigated.
An eBay spokesman said the parcel's contents were "somewhat unusual" and it would help police with their inquiries.
The boy's parents, who are not commenting, alerted police when the parcel arrived on 20 March.
Family claim
Magistrates have given Norfolk Police until September to hold on to the money before the case comes up in court again.
But, if the money remains unclaimed the family could potentially apply for it to be returned to them under the Police Property Act.
A police spokesman said: "We have until 22 September before we have to go back to court to apply for a further order if necessary."
A spokesman for eBay said: "We know that eBay is a great place to pick up a bargain, although in this case, we agree that the contents of the parcel were somewhat unusual and we will assist with any inquiries the police may wish to make."

I probably would.

It could be counterfeit or stolen. If it's not legitimate, I'm sure you could get in a hell of a lot of trouble for using it.

Hahahahhhahahahaha! EXACTLY when FR3K3R said "Who the hell would report this?" I was thinking: "Hmmm.... Frodo probably would..."

I would have changed the money over almost instantly. (A casino would be a good place to do it... in disguise.)

You could always look for something that was 90 or 45k and pay for it in cash under an assumed name. (If a name were even necessary. Worry about the details later.)

But that's just me maybe... :)

Its not smart to steal large amounts of money from criminals, which is very possibly the case here.

Turning the money in is a good way to save yourself or a family member from being dead. Its not like the seller doesn't know where they live and where his $95k got to.

Its not like finding a twenty on the street:D

Unless of course, your smart like me and have it send to your work where over 1000 people are on campus and the name isn't your real name.

That's exactly what I was thinking. The thought of going on one helluva shopping spree would be tempting, but the thought of waking up with a gun to my head (or not waking up at all) would force me to do the "right" thing, and report it. I'm as greedy as the next person, but self preservation trumps all.

Should have contacted the seller first. Could have been a drug dealer mistake, could have been a "guess what??! you're one lucky guy today.." kind of thing. If it was a mistake, the cash could have been sent back with an alert to the police just in case anything bad happened.

And you do this in anticipation of being the 1 in 10 billion ebay transactions that gets $95k sent to you?

He reported it as it could be drug money if no one claims it back (and probably no one will as you'd be given yourself up) he gets it all every penny.

1 thing I am thinking I wonder if he gave the seller postive feedback HA HA HA HA!

stupid parents! i wouldn't have said a friggin word if 90k showed up in a package.

Thats a touchy subject on that. If you turn it into the police sure you'll basically cover your butt if he doesn't claim it and truely it will become legally yours.

If I had that much come to me I'd be WTF! Really while a part of me would want to turn it in, the other part would say keep it keep it all :) Bad side to reporting it is surely you'd have to report it under taxes, if you don't and its all cash, well you'll be spending a bit of cash for a while :)
