Quad Core Safe Temp Range

I just got a q6600 but I'm still using a Storm. I hope to start overclocking tommorrow but I know temps are going to be less than ideal. Can someone tell me what the safe temperature range is for quads?

Intel's thermal ceiling for the Q6600's

B3 Q6600 - 105w TDP, 62°C max temp
G0 Q6600 - 95w TDP, 71°C max temp

from intel's spec sheet - the cpu is rated to run at temps up to 71*C for the g0 and 62.2*C for the b3

we will have to get some input from the more experienced to find out what temps people are comfortable with though.

edit: dammit brolloks ya beat me by a minute :P

Is that for each core, or the overall cpu temp that is reported?

The Intel thermal spec is the temp as measured at the center of the IHS. This is the temp reported by Speedfan as CPU - generally about 10c cooler than the core temps.

Thanks - I thought that sounded a little low if it was the individual core temps!

ehhm those values are for TCASE not TJUNCTION - coretemp reads tjunction, the tjunction limit for quads is IIRC 100C.

So the cores can run at 100C and be safe? At 101C not safe?

I'm interested in this also.

I was able to get my B3 up to 3200 and it was stable while playing games but when I ran 4-thread prime95 core temps were going up over 80c (as reported in TAT), so I brought it back to 3000 and it seems to stay under the ~75c I've been told is the point at which it's really too hot.

It's my fault for using the stock heatsink, looking to get a tuniq tower 120 soon. It might be able to go past 3200 since it seemed to handle it even with the high temps, but I'm not even going to try it with the stock HSF.

As long they're stable, not throttling and those CPU fans if they're controlled automatically by the mobo isn't too loud for you, its safe, as simple as that.

Are you saying it's safe to run a B3 Q6600 at 80-85c under load (TJunction) as long as the computer is stable? What's the point of intel specifying a max thermal rating then? (62.2 TCase which would be 72.2-77.2 TJunction).

I mean if it's just that simple, then great, but it's kinda scary to see it getting so hot.

Yes, as simple as that !

Unless, you're planning to do this at your IHS with a "calibrated" temp probe, then I will be "heavily" suggest you to obey the Intel's spec.

thanks to all for the info.

When I look at Speedfan, it reports a temp of 59C and when I look at Core Temp, it reports a temp of tJunct of 100C and the individual cores are between 73C & 81C.

What is the real temp of my Q6600? I am only overclocking to 2.727 or 303 on the FSB x9 as the multiplyer. I am using the stock cooler (I plan to get something better soon).

Does anyone know if either of these temps is accurate? Speedfan also shows some crazy results for my fan RPMs (like 15,000 - 75,000) so I am thinking it is gathering some bogus data.

I would like to get the Q6600 to 3.0 or better. What is the max with the stock cooler? Can anyone share the voltage settings required to get to 3.0 GHz or better?

thx

Paul

BTW - I am a newbie and I know it

If coretemp reads all the individual cores as under 70C after 24hrs you're likely safe for 24/7 use since even Supreme Commander won't get nearly as hot as prime95 does. That's really all you need to be concerned with.

Also, go for an ultra 120-extreme if you can afford the extra 10 dollars or so. Tuniq towers a great heatsinks for single and dualcores but quadcores just don't like them for whatever reason.

Speedfan is off by 15*, and CoreTemp is as accurate as you're going to get. Are the 73 & 81 temps listed above during load? If so how are you loading the CPU? You should use the latest P95 that stresses all 4 cores simultaneously. Use the small fft test.

How did you mount the HS? Did you use AS5? If you can't afford a new HS you need to at least get some AS5 on there.

What MoBo do you have...just list all your gear if you don't mind?

3GHz on the stock cooler "may" be possible, but you are going to have to control the voltage manually...perhaps lower it from stock. You'll probably want to set a lot of BIOS settings manually actually.

Report back and we'll see what we can do for ya!

Using coretemp, temps under 85C are ideal, 100 is max - Tjunction. Coretemp measures temps at the hot spots in the cores themselves.

Using speedfan, the core temperatures are 15C too low. You may however use the "CPU Temp" reading which somewhat accurate in any program. This temperature comes from in-between the cores and is about 10-15C cooler. Intel measures their Tcase with a device right at the center of the CPU - which will display an even cooler result than the temperature "CPU Temp".

Using Intel's Thermal Specification of 62.2C, you can assume a 65-70C "CPU Temp" reading and a 75-80C Core reading (hottest core).

Keep your Cores under 85C using Coretemp - and run stability programs to ensure you OC is ok. If your CPU passes stability tests, you are safe.
