Good Firewall for Vista

I would like to have a free firewall to use with vista. I tried the Vista version fo Zone Alarm but I keep getting missing .dll errors. I also tried Jetico, but it is blocked by Vista because of "compatibility issues."

What's another good firewall to use? Needless to say, I don't trust the Vista firewall too much.

No offense and I appreciate the help, but I said in my post above that Vista blocks the .exe install file saying that there are known incompatibilty issues. It won't let me install it.

I very briefly looked around, and jetico supposedly supports vista. When this happened to me, I would try running the setup as adminor setting it to compatibility mode and seeing if it works.

If "blocks the .exe" means you can't try these methods, "my bad"

Routers are great for blocking inbound connections, yes. But I am also looking for a good free firewall that works with vista because I also like to monitor outbound connections as well.

I might just be dumb but on the Jetico download page it seems like only the previous non-Vista version is free.

Nope the vista one is free also, but it is blocked by vista, so it's no good.

Gives me a message as soon as I click on the .exe install file.

I was looking for a free one myself and decided to buy one. Then I had to find one that works with network magic, so I went with norton360. I had a discount since I did the beta testing thing. It works great. But as for free.... Zone alarm is the game in town for now.

I'm curious as to what's wrong w/ Vista's built-in firewall, and why you don't trust it. What would a free third party firewall like ZA offer protection-wise over Vista's?

Have you not been using microsoft products for the last decade? LOL

For my wife's laptop, I actually left the vista firewall intact. I don't trust it entirely, but for her it's about hassle as much as security. She travels with it, so I leave the OS in a state she can deal with. If a firewall starts giving her crap, or she needs to connect to another network, then she needs to be able to figure it out on her own generally so simplicity is best.

IMO the track record of microsoft's "security" model (best used with quotes) lingers on, regardless of its true standing now. BTW interrupting everything with a DEP prompt is not security in my book. I don't see linux desktops interrupting everything, but I don't see the issues leading up to a DEP prompt on linux either.

Sorry to go off track, just making an observation and stating my opinion on it.
