Will there a big performance hit if I use DDR2-533MHz memory with an AM2
processor?

It's for a home PC I'm putting together for someone.

The system won't be overclocked or anything like that. Just used for the
usual web surfing, light gaming, CD/DVD encoding stuff.

The DDR2 memory is stuff he had a while back. I was planning to go LGA775
but he spotted an awesome deal on an AM2 X2 3800+ and Biostar 690 board.

If it's 3-3-3 timed it'll be goood enough for a stock X2 3800.

I bet the slow things have some room to overclock so the memory won't slow the system down.

From the sound of they would not notice it. Only when you start loading it up with big apps and games will memory get in the way. Playing DVD,CDs and Online content is more IO intensive and the HT bus is wide open to handle it.
