I have this older computer which I am trying to install XP on. It has been on there previously with pretty much the exact same hardware minus one optical drive. When I put the CD in to install it now, it gets to the "Windows is now inspecting your hardware" screen, and then it goes black and hangs. The CD is still spinning for about 45-60 more seconds but eventually it stops and it stays
at the black screen.
I tested the CD on this computer and it pretty much works flawlessly. I didn't run the whole setup but it got past the point the other computer would.
I know my theory that my computer has a mind of its own and decided it doesn't want that crap in its system anymore could be impossible, but what's bugging me is that it is running linux fine. I just did a clean install of linux about a week ago, everything worked fine then, and now it boots up into linux fine. So realistically, I'm thinking there is a hardware failure. Possibly the dvd drive, but I bet if I popped the linux install cd in there, it'd work fine. I want to format the drive completely and just have windows, I decided I don't want to use linux for the purpose I am needing.
Any ideas how to circumvent this problem?
EDIT: Forgot, here are the specs
AMD Athlon XP 2500+
ASUS A7N8X Deluxe mobo
ATI 9600xt video card - 128mb
Kingston Value Ram - 256mb
WD 120GB SATAI HD
at the black screen.
