E2140 not very stable..

HI, i just recently bought an E2140 running on a Asus PK5, OCZ 2gb DDR2 800 S.O.E, 7600gt, all powered by a 500w powerbox.

Well i am using a stock cooler, and AS5 underneath it.

I can reach 2.9 ghz (1.4v) on it, and it'll get into windows, but when i stress it with SP2004 is reaches over 72 so naturally i will stop stressing, and it'll go back down to 27.

I can only get the heat stable (57 under stress) at 2.4ghz (1.4v) but every now and then the computer will just restart without warning when i am just doing the simplest of tasks, like opening a folder.

just wondering if any of you guys have an e2140 and are using the same mobo as me or have any idea how to get it stable.

If you are using an older core temp, it could be it. It had a bug that was casuing restarts.

What is ur vcore and FSB set at?

So you're still on stock Intel HSF, click my sig on "Still using LGA775 stock HSF ?" and hopefully you have generous friend in your neighbourhood, or if there is none, try lap the IHS and the heatsink base it self, again my sig at -> "How to lap Intel stock LGA775 HSF".

Imo, you should consider to replace that HSF with an aftermarket one, doesn't need to be top class HSF to beat it.

vcore is 1.4v, FSB 300. 8*300 = 2.4ghz.

so it might be core temp eh?

and i am buying an thermalright ultima 90 and putting a 120mm fan on it on Wednesday, then i'll oc and see what temps i am gunna run at.

Before anyone recommend i get the extreme i am going to say that ultima 90 is much smaller, lighter, and preforms only 1-2 degrees worse. not to mention cheaper

i dropped my multiplier down to 6 and put the FSB to 400mhz and the computer wont post.
It wont post past anything over 355.
I am guessing that my motherboard is holding me back?

The computer is stable now @ 8*355 = 2.8ghz, with temps of 44 under load.

Should i return the P5k and get another or should i pay an extra $10 and get an Gigabyte P35-ds3p

It may not be the MoBo. These C2x chips seem to have definitive FSB walls that are inherent in the chips themselves. My wall is at 480 (x3210). Other P35 boards don't seem to be the answer. A future chipset may allow higher FSB speeds, but I wouldn't think that a different P35 board will help you get much higher.

Lower your CPU voltage. Your cpu doesn't need 1.4v to get just 2.4ghz. MY E2140 does 2.9ghz with only 1.3125v.

Lowering your voltage will greatly reduce temps. I'd say lower it to 1.35v and see how far you can get.

I would say the chip is limited due to the fact that it's considered basically a non-up-to-spec 6XXX series. Is that remotely correct?

how are you so sure it is the board? Have you tried another chip in that board? I thought my board was also limiting since I can't push much past 370 with this 2160 but I can put in a 6xxx series and push past 400 easily.

the asus boards should be fine to overclock the cpu to just 3-3.2ghz.

You may want to try a differnt psu. I've never heard of super flower, and getting a crap psu is the last thing you want to do.

Also, like i said earlier, make sure you drop that voltage back down a little. Try increasing the NB volts one increment, and increase the fsb. Also make sure your ram is running 1:1, and if it is out of spec, either increase dimm volts, or loosen the timings.

The P5K is a good board. I wouldn't automatically assume that's your problem. Look at your PSU as White_Pawn suggested.

I had similar results with my 2160, and was dissapointed. I could run it stable at 3.0ghz but it took over 1.4v to do it. Temperatures also got pretty high at around 75C. I think the 2140 and 2160 are hit and miss. Some people are able to hit 3.2 and beyond with stock voltage, and others won't do 2.9 at stock. The 2180 is more of a guarantee as it is an M0 stepping, and will probably hit 3.6.

P5K-VM w/E2140 - Max FSB 266x8 stable with lots of fans, 233x8 with heat from video card dumping on NB sink. Anything higher than 266 would not finish booting windows.

P35-DS3R w/E2140 - Same chip, I boot 375x8 no sweat. :|

I finally seem to have mine stable at 390x8 (3120Mhz) running a GeminII with (2) Antec 120 MM fans. I reversed my exhaust and intake (now exhausting from front) and that dropped temps a solid 5*C. Ran Prime 95 all night with temps hovering around 63-63C. I am happy with this little chip.
