itunes issue 4gigs of ram not enough

okay does the newest version of itunes rival M$ in terms of bloatware. I'm playing with my library and updating it and I run out of memory!

The system is sluggish and crashes! Never crashes or sluggish unless I'm o/c testing or itunes is open.

What program should I use instead of itunes. i'm xp pro btw.

Amen to that, I have ripped all my CDs to my computer, thats over 10,000 songs. Winamps library makse is so easy to organize the songs by artist, and album. Loads fast and takes about 25MB of ram (with fancy skins and all). Not to mention winamp is probably the best audio media player in existance.

You can install Linux on an Ipod and drag and drop. Rockbox in an amazing MP3 player OS, I use it on my iRiver H10, works on Ipods etc too.

Are there any other competing iPod alternative OS's that one should consider? I've heard bad things about the resulting battery life when using RockBox.

Battery life does go down, but its worth it, it practicaly turns the thing into a miniature computer. I dont know of any others since I dont use Ipods (i hate em) I know of rockbox because it is the only OS that runs on my H10.

I mean by all means give it a try, if you dont like it revert back to the original apple firmware, depending on what Ipod you have, there is a downloadable bootloader that allows you to dual boot between both apple os and rockbox.

How much does battery life go down? Are we talking 20 hours to 19.5 hours, or 20 hours to 2 hours?

Do you have an enormous music library? Maybe you just need to set up a bigger page file so Windows can swap more to disk if needed. I've never seen a problem with itunes and RAM, but maybe you just have an enormous amount of music. It still seems odd, because I can't imagine why itunes would want to hold much actual music in memory at once, and I can't imagine how the db itself could exceed 4gb.

Well my H10 used to get about 14 hours and gets 8 hours playing a 128kbs mp3 with rockbox. Its not horrible but is almost halved.

itunes is horrible, Its library is bloated as hell. Ipods suck just for the fact that they cant produce their own library and get itunes to create it for it while you copy music to it. People have said that this is because it would take to long on the player itself. Contrary to peoples belief it doesnt, maybe on an Ipod it would since the way the software is written is inneficient but properly written software can do it in no time at all. My H10 use to take 30 min to create a library with its original firmware, rockbocks takes maybe 25 sec to create a complete library of 20GB worth of music.

I dont even know what the question is anymore, because it seems every other post is talking about something else.
As for a media player, I suggest Foobar. Its lightweight, you can get the library module, customize the look to how you want, etc.

I.M.O.G.: I'm sorry to inform you that your sig violates forum rules. Due to obscene, and frankly ugly, choices of colors you must change this. I suggest brown and orange perhaps.
lol JK... Congratulations on your season. Greetings from Cleveland, the home of "There's always next year".
cw823: I think you need to edit your sig, this could finally be a year for a Cleveland team. Go Cavs!
