Shuttle AK31a - Filling All 4 RAM Slots

I remember hearing a number of rumors about this board having problems running with all four memory slots filled up. I've never had enough DDR DIMMs around the house to give it a whirl myself, but after my roomate upgraded his computer (to a shiny new Athlon X2 ) I managed to grab his two 512MB sticks.

The computer boots up and runs but is on the flakey side, crashing after 12 hours or so of running S&M or SETI. Memtest gives the system a clean bill of health, but S&M goes wild with a few dozen errors after a few minutes.

I've tried relaxing the timings as much as possible to no avail (though it shouldn't matter since all my sticks are underclocked anyway ). Does anybody remember any tips on getting this board to use four DIMMs? I've been running with three DIMMs for a long time without problems, but from what I can guess it seems like four is just too much of a load (registered memory would likely help according to Google).

Seems like it's too much for the mem controller to handle.

Maybe ECC RAM?

I suggest that you should try these memory location tests with registered DDR memory, because

Motherboard manual [Abit KR7A] says that supported maximum amount unbuffered memory is 3GB and registered 4GB;
I had similar problems with Asus A7M266-D board (also 4 DDR dimm slots) and found out that particular ASUS supports 2 unbuffered dimms with maximum memory size 2GB or 4 registered dimms with maximum memory size 3.5GB (not 4GB).
So it seems that electrical loading is still a big issue with DDR and registered memory seems to help. And that's logical because with registered memory, memory bus gets only the load of input registers, not all the memory chip's, and each register on each dimm gets the load of only that dimm's memory chips.

Just wanted to let you know in order to use all 4 slots, you have to have ECC RAM - at least for the Shuttle it's that way. I would imagine it is probably the same for the other boards, since they're all the same chipset. You didn't mention if you used ecc ram [NO] when you used all four slots, so that is why I brought it up.

Have you tried upping the DDR voltage a bit? It may be that it's dropping too low, but that the mb can compensate for it. It's worth a try.

You could also try slowing down the RAM and seeing if that helps. Underclock it just a bit, and maybe up the cpu multi. It becomes debatable if it's even worth it then...
