command an conquer generals online problem

i know this game is old but i need some help.

whenever i try to create a generals online account it gives me the error message "could not connect to generals online" is this because EA does not run the generals servers any more? my firewall is disabled so that is not the problem.
any help will be gladly accepted.

you may have to open some ports. Also make sure you have the latest patch installed.

all of my ports are open and all of the patches are installed. still "could not connect to generals online"
