Ok am i doing something Wrong , i have been gone to darn long , i know pscout was the last to help me about 1yr ago , right now i will take any help i can get , need to get this started:beer:

Ok people are getting confused with my Sig so im going to change it to the system i have now im sry all for this confustion

The SMP client is too complicated to simply install it and expect it to run, especially on Vista. Everybody has to actually read the instructions, as unpleasant as that may be.

This is a good starting point:

http://www.ocforums.com/showthread.php?t=505126

You'll have to disable UAC and install FAH as an administrator.

Actually looking at the referenced post, the latest client has an installer that makes a lot of the instructions in the post unnecessary.

The installer must be run from an account with administrator rights and UAC must be turned off. Follow the instructions given by the intstall program.

Well i guess im out of luck here i dont like the Smp one, i guess i just dont understand it but then again i dont understand alot of things

i Just dont understand it ,i went to that post you sent me to but still i get nothing

I'm no guru on Vista, but I'm sure we can troubleshoot your rig's problem, XRogerX.

If you'd like to do that, please post up, and we'll get started. Once you see how SMP works through the WU's, you'll like it well enough to swear by it, instead of at it. :soda:

:welcome: back Roger :)

Sorry to take so long to respond ... but i actually had to work all day today

As Chas said, the Win SMP client is a bit more complicated to install than the standard client.

Before installing it you will need to:
- have a userid and password setup on windows
- install .net 2.0 ... although from what i read on the win smp faq, it is already installed with vista. I don't run vista so I will be going on what i have read, not what i have done with it.

The client package you downloaded is really only an unpacker so when you run it you will end up with a new directory (depending where you point it) with a bunch of files.

One of the unpacked files is an install.bat which will set up 2 programs (smpd.exe and mpiexec.exe) that will be needed by the fah.exe client program and you will need .net 2.0 installed (already done with vista?) and a windows userid AND password setup BEFORE it will work.

So, if your have setup your userid and password, turn off UAC. This step is not mentioned in the faq but it seems to be necessary in vista.

Then from a cmd line in the folding directory your created, or by double clicking on it from an explorer window, run the install.bat.
- It will prompt you with your current windows id ... you can just hit enter.
- then it will prompt you for the password twice to confirm so enter it twice as prompted.

If it worked ok you will see:
Code:
If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working
Now setup a shorcut to lauch the client with:
- from an explorer window showing your folding directory select fah.exe. Right click on it and select create a shortcut.
-select the shortcut just created and right click on it and select properties.
- at the end of the 'Target" field add the following " -forceasm -verbosity 9" without the quotes and including all the spaces.
- click on apply and then ok to close it.

You know have a shortcut on your desktop ... double click on it to launch the client.
You will now be prompted to configure the client:
- enter your folding user name
- and team # (32)
- accept the default to the next 4 prompts by just hitting enter.
- to the next prompt "allow receipt of assignments greater than 5 MB" type in yes.
- accept the default to the next prompt by hitting enter

and if everything is ok the client will download a new userid # for this client, an smp wu and a core to crunch it and then start crunching it.

You have to leave the window open although you can minimize it
.. don't close it or the client will be terminated.

You can stop the client by having the window visible and in focus and typing ctrl-c.

To restart the client after stopping it just double click the shortcut you created.

If you need to change a configuration setting, just stop the client, create a new shortcut as above with " -configonly" at the end of the target string and you will be taken though the configuration prompts again.

If you have any problems, let us know which step went wrong.

Also, here is the faq from stanford http://folding.stanford.edu/English/FAQ-SMP

ok i hope this is what people are talking about

CoreStatus = 63 (99)
Thats listed as a permission issue

Allow receipt of work assignments greater than 5MB in size (no/yes) [no]?
You can make this Yes.

To stop the client hit control and c. Then wait till the core's stop or check that they are stopped(couple of minutes). Try starting it again, say 5 times do this and see if it gets going.

I think the core status 99 means your install.bat did not work correctly.

Try running it again ... did you get the double message acknowledgement?

If it is not working correctly than you still must not have turned off UAC before install?

Two things:

1) you must have UAC shut off FIRST before you run install bat

2) you must be currently signed in to an account with full administrative rights, and a password, when you run install.bat

You need to take this step by step.

"Meter by meter, life is sweeter"

63(99) core status is indeed a permissions failure.

You're getting very close to having this in the bag, XRX.

Ok im am the Admin of this system

i dont understand the password stuff

Ok im am the Admin of this system

i dont understand the password stuff

When you boot vista are you prompted for a userid and password to logon?

If no then you need to setup a password on your account.

I dunno where this is in vista ... in wxp you can get there by settings-> control panel ->user accounts.

Select the account you created for yourself when you installed vista, and select create password. Type in password of your choice twice to confirm and then apply.

You will now need to use your password to logon everytime you start vista, but if you are folding 724 this should not be an issue since you won't be booting often. If you have a screensaver set up there should be an option to not require a logon when resuming from screensaver.

before running the install.bat again, make sure the client is stopped, and that UAC is turned off.
If you don't know how to turn off UAC, someone else will have to help with that since i don't have/know vista navigation.
When you then run install.bat, you will be prompted for the userid you are using and it should match the userid you just created the password for ... and if so then just hit enter.
Then enter the password to the 2 prompts you will get.

If you got the 2 lines:
If you see this twice, MPI is working
If you see this twice, MPI is working

Then it should be set up right, and you can launch the client again.
