I have Vista home home premium and about 2 days ago the automatic updates turned itself off. I went into security center and tried to turn it back on and it says it's unable to turn the automatic updates on and it needs to be done manually. I then try turn turn it back on manually and it won't turn on, no matter what options I choose. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

Check to make sure the Automatic Updates service is set to Automatic (Start | Run | Type services.msc, and click OK) | Scroll down to Automatic Updates, right-click and select Properties | Change the "Startup type" to Automatic, and click the Start button.

Automatic updates still turn itself off??

Check to make sure the Automatic Updates service is set to Automatic (Start | Run | Type services.msc, and click OK) | Scroll down to Automatic Updates, right-click and select Properties | Change the "Startup type" to Automatic, and click the Start button.

I have Windows XP SP 2, and introduced a hijacker into my PC by downloading and executing a "video plug-in". I was careful to scan it for virus and spyware, but installing it has created havoc. New windows open with verious things, mostly porn, whenever I do a search either in Yahoo or Google. I did an XP Repair to no avail, and the Automatic Updates keep getting turned off, even after I've done as you suggested.

I really don't care if Automatic Updates IS turned off, but I do worry that something not under my control continues to turn it off after I've turned it on.

I had Spybot - Search & Distroy, but it conflicted with my AVG Virus and Anti-spyware applications, and drove me crazy with all the pop-ups, so I uninstalled it. Hijack-This is no help, since I don't recognize anything that shouldn't be in its list.

Help???
