Alternate Cooling for GeForce 8800GTS 640MB

I've got a EVGA 640-P2-N825-AR GeForce 8800GTS 640MB on order & am thinking I may want to try my hand at OC'ing just a bit, and curious about cooling, while my case has good cooling in it & I think it would be fine I think getting a better cooler maybe a wise idea from past expierences.

Anyhow what's a good 3rd party cooler for this card & what type of power connector for the fan does it have on it?

Thanks...

Stock coolers are just as good if not better than most after market coolers. Just crank the fan to 100% with Riva and OC.

Only reason I would take the stock HSF off would be for water.

There are several HS's that will outperform the stock one. And several that will be only a tad better but MUCH quieter.

The TR HR-03 as suggested is one of the best and will drop temps far below stock cooling and is a lot quieter.

But generally will not increase the max OC.

dropping temps 10c could certainly help increase OC ability. Especially when its the load temp that is lowered.

Well mine never breaks 65°c. Most G80's hit 621 core on the stock cooler. A lot of them (Revision A2) won't do 648 core no matter the cooling. I just don't think upgrading the cooling is worth it.

Nah

The card's with max out before you get near the max temps. (You get "snow", and odd looking ****, and it decreases your FPS once you go that far)

he speaks the truth... my a2 8800gts maxes out at 621... no matter what... i wish i had an a3, cus ppl are pulling like 700mhz on the core!

i think gfx cards should have a bios just like a mobo... i want more volts to the core i give it more volts, more volts to the ram, NO PROBLEM, loosen or tighten timings on ram, YOU GOT YOUR SELF A DEAL!

lol

I think it is time to break out into song... Wouldn't it be nice if we could...

I agree but then everyone would buy the low end cards and OC them. Seems as if nVidia and ATi are smarter than Intel and AMD but that would make AMD smater than their self.. humm You are correct the earlier revisions did much higher core clocks. I think they may be getting in the Ultras and the GTX's get stuck with the "crappy" cores.

i took the SLi down when i found out i had an A2 and an A3, i have been playing around with the A3 for the last week and a half or so, and yes - i just got done playing like 3 hours of COD2 @ 702 ROP on the A3

now i only wish i had two of them, 702ROP in SLi would just be sick.

i think im going to try and sell the A2 locally, then see if i can pick up another A3 somehow.

How can you tell if one is an A1,A2 A3 or whatever?

Funny question but i just got a 8800gts and took it apart and noticed that the stock heatsink covers the voltage regulators i believe...do those need heatsinks?...or is the mcw60 and memory heatsinks good? oh and this chip on the right side of the gpu

maybe i need to buy the mc8800 since it has the voltage reg heatsinks too..

I guess OCing the 8800 series cards is a lot diff than ATI cards. Perhaps they have it locked in some way to never go past that speed?

Correction ATI/AMD cards have voltage regulators that you can modify the voltage on though.. So really only nVidia is the one thats hurting overall OCers that don't want to do hard mods to there cards, but nVidia does have some nice and fast cards though so guess its a trade off.

They aren't putting software controlled voltages on the card to help save in costs probably. At least thats what one of the reasons i'd guess. Second would be to avoid getting excessive RMA's from people not knowing what they are doing and frying the card by using too much voltage. Waste of there time and money doing that.
