quick question, quick answer please...

I'm helping my sister in law with her computer....she's got a gateway...p4 1.5 gig, no clue what motherboard....but, I installed a stick of 128mb ram, it's not detecting it...do I need to enable it in the bios? and how the heck do I get to the bios?? I've tried f8, del, and ah..can't remember what else...all to no avail....help!!

Sometimes you need to go into the bios before add memory will be detected.
Try the insert key,F2, or tab key.

That's a gateway mobo? I think you're outta luck unless u buy their proprietarry stuff. I know I haven't been able to make it work on 2 friend's comps either=\

And for oem bios I like jamming at the F# keys. some where b/w F1 to F8 enters the bios=) Yes, I know you already got in=)

Compaq had proprietary memory. Try removing the oem memory and see if it detects the new stuff.

Compaq would work with their memory...or other memory, but not both.

Shadow, did compaq change this ram issue now?

I've been running my work compaq with crucial and the original compaq ram without a problem.

I've also used kingston value ram in some of the compaqs here at work.

This is on deskpro machines.

Does her system use RDRAM or SDRAM? I think that RDRAM has to be installed in pairs so if that is what she has that might be the problem. If it is SDRAM are you using the same type module that is already there?
