Sound Cards? Why?

Honestly, what is the point of going out and buying a SB Live, if you are just going to play games on your system? I am asking this out of curiosity. I have a good idea what they are capable of, but I think most people could really just stick with on-board sound. I'm curious as to why people spend more money then that need to? Does really sound any better? Your speakers will control that more than anything else?

I think that for some its more that they want to be able to get the surround that they want....

Me personally, this is also my stereo... which heck Id spend buttloads on a good stereo, why not just spend it on my rig?
While Im at it, my goal is to make my rig my entire home entertainment system... but thats just me....

I didn't think I needed asound card either, but I got one anyways

believe me onboard sound is nothing, especially if you like bass, before my SB i did'nt really know what bass was, til it almost blew a hole in my floor =)=)=)

ever had anyone sneak up behind you in a game? I havn't =)

World of difference in quality sound, even if only in a game. I'm about to spend $400 just for speakers for my games. (although I play an occasional DVD while surfing)

i have a cmi8738 onboard, you wouldnt beleive how annoying it sounds in comparison with any sound card.
onboard video has much better quality than onboard sound.

You guys do make a point. But I still think I'll hold off a little bit before I consider buying a sound card. I'll consider when I move out of my 24-hour quiet hall in the dorms. This plays a damper on volume.

Depending if you have good quality speakers and games that sound where is very important ie: Counter Strike, FPS etc. and such.

You will get your "surround sound" damn that sounds sexy anyways you will get a new feel of sound and your ground will have holes in it and your mom will come in the door screaming at you to turn off the damn thing.

Its a whole new feel hehe.

If you get a 24 bit sound card get the Santa Cruz one. I've read great reviews about them.

Right now I'm still using onboard audio, but I plan on buying an Audigy Mp3+. I like big sound!

Really, for the full experience onboard audio just isn't going to cut it. To me, it's kind of like a subpar mini-boombox (with mid-range but not much base or high-range) vs a top-of-the-line component system.

Onboard sound is usually 16-bit sound. The SB-16 I have in my other system, I can't sit and listen to unless I'm concentrating on something else. Then it doesn't matter as long as something is playing in the background. Cs goes so much better when you have a soundtrack...

actually i dont know why im using that horrible cmi yet. the fact for ppl using onboard audio like me is that any card will sound better than the onboard chip can do. cheap sound cards is easy to afford so its not worth at all to keep using any onboard audio.
