Hi, been a long while since I've had problems with my comp,

recently my 36g raptor sometimes doesn't boot up my pc, then goes in CHKDSK and comes up with errors like

Correcting error in index $I30 for file [random numbers here]
Correcting error in index $I30 for file [random numbers here]
and lots more of these

then it will say lotssssss of
Recovering orphaned file DOUBLE~1.PTC (4022) into directory file 4009.
Recovering orphaned file Double Quote.PTC (4022) into directory file 4009.
Recovering orphaned file Equal.PTC (4023) into directory file 4009.

not them files, just an example.

After the CHKDSK is over, my pc eventually starts up as normal, then my pc is ok for a few hours/days.

Then it will happen again, is my HDD dying a slow death? should i be ordering a new one now?

I've tried zero filling the drive, formatting, nothing seems to help

I only use my pc for WoW these days, nothing else,

Also, is it dangerous to continue using my computer whilsts it's like this?

THanks

Stop tinkering, 1st thing to do, backup the important stuffs in there while you still can access it.

Nothing really to back up, all my media safe on the laptop, transfered anything i needed through network to my laptop, which wasn't much.

Also forgot to mention, the drive was bought december 2003, pc has been on almost everyday since then... had like 200 formats lol, so perhaps it's just served me well, done it's job, and now time to go?

Formatting a drive (the long way) puts a HUGE amount of stress on it.

So yeah, it is probably dying.

It is an enterprise drive, so 5 year warranty. Why not RMA?

I'll see what i can do about RMAing it, also, another thing

my raptor has a molex and SATA power connectors, the sata AND molex power connectors have been in it for all of these years, is that a bad thing?

THAT IS BAD, VERY BAD!

Only ONE must be connected, not both!!!!

That could seriously damage the drive!

Uh oh...

Erm, don't mention that when you RMA it

oh dear!

Never knew all these years, omg... maybe thats why it's dying

Support phone line closed at the moment, until Monday it reopens, so guess I'll have to wait awhile

Well, I would unplug the molex power then do a reformat and install and see if the errors come up again.

Have you tried a re-install using a different CD? and maybe a different optical drive?

A bad windows install could cause this too

I will try this, and ive took out the molex for good, pc is booting up fine atm

I can RMA if need be too, just sent a request and waiting on email

UPDATE!!
Just ran a quick test with DLG Tools, and it shows a "SMART ERROR"

Ill try put this all in as best as i can, so it looks like i see it in DOS (Im posting on laptop whilst looking at my computer)

As you can see "Raw Read Error Rate" is the problem I think? as it shows a star (*) next to it, all the others seem ok
