Exclamation Getting "cant find dvd decoder" error, Help!

Hey Guys,

I'm at my Bros and just installed a samsung SD-608 dvd-rom in his computer the drivers installed automaticaly and I put in a dvd to watch the player installed then when I went to play it said it didnt detect a dvd decoder..

There was no other noticable hardware in the computer where I got the dvd from, so I'm assuming I need a certain software program to make this work?

Any help would be appreciated I'm treading on new ground.

First things first, double check the following;

: Be sure the video card in the computer can support DVD Decoding, my Voodoo Banshee will not, but newer chipsets will.

: You need to make sure you installed DVD Software, such as PowerDVD or the like, zoran made something called softdvd. Never heard much about it tho.

: Make sure you enable DMA on the DVD Drive in your Device manager in windows.

: If the Video card does not support DVD Encoding you are either going to need a Decoder board *Hollywood video I believe makes them* or a new vid card, something like a GF2 MX Series will suffice.

If you need anymore help let me know I will do what I can.

LOL....can't find decoder device because you didn't install on.

Makes sense to me!

I have a SIS 6236 AGP Rev HO grafix card in this box with 4mb of ram on it.. whooo.. heh..

Anyways I've tryed changing the drivers a few times, messed around with powerstrip and got alot better performance out of it, but still no luck with the dvd's..

Exactly how would I install a dvd decoder, is it hardware or software???

Like I said I'm treading on new ground here.

the dvd player is a samsung sd-608 if that helps, thanks.

If the video card does not support it, chances are you are out of luck with getting it to dvd decode. You at that juncture have two choices, you can purchase a dvd decoder board, I found one for 40$ here;
http://www.nexthardwareshop.com/sigdesdvddec.html
Or you can order a newer video card either a PCI, or AGP depending on what his motherboard will support you can get a GeForce 2 MX Series all for under 50$ Considering that will get you hardware dvd support that is not a bad deal, and some of those will even come with video out. I would honestly recommend going the vid card route, it's a win win situation he get's way better gaming capabilities and he get's dvd support.

Just my two cents.

The Voodoo3 3000 supports software DVD decoding, unfortunately my Voodoo3 2000 does not. I have to use my decoder card in my second system if if I want to use it to watch DVD's.
