Tips for New Folders

Stopping the FAH client ==> The right way to stop any FAH client is by using Ctrl+C keypress in combination. DON'T just click on the 'X' square in the upper right hand corner of the FAH window. You MAY lose all your folding progress!

General Tips ==> In the newest smp version you need the " -smp" tag in the command line: "./fah6 -smp" for Linux. Soon for Windows smp also, Stanford says.

Windows smp folding will stop if the system detects loss of internet connectivity. Always stop the Windows smp client before rebooting your modem, replacing your cable, etc. Not a problem for Linux smp folders.

Linux smp requires 64 bit versions AND 32 bit libraries. Console 64 bit version is best; server version is strictly a command line interface. If you choose to use a Virtual Machine set up for this, you can run 64 bit Linux on top of 32 bit Windows IF your cpu supports "virtualization". Check your BIOS if you need to.

With Vista OS you need to (usually) disable UAC, before installing the smp software. With all OS's, you should be signed in to an account with full administrative privileges before installing the smp files, and carefully follow all the other install procedures listed in the smp d/l page, right next to the client you want to install. This is NOT a good place to cut corners (we've already tried! ).

Monitoring Your Folding ==> Two good one's:

FahMon: http://www.silent-blade.org, and click on the FahMon link.
FahSpy: http://www.fahspy.com/index_eng.shtml

A Few Good Initialization Tags ==>
" -verbosity 9" adds more verbose output - very helpful whenever you have a problem with FAH.
" -forceasm" ensures your rig will never run with the non-optimized "standard" code, which is much slower.
" -smp" allows smp folding on Linux rigs, with the client version 6 or higher.
" -config" starts a new configuration function.

Formats Required ==> All configuration options (in the client.cfg file), MUST have this format: ConfigOption=yes, or ConfigOption=no, (or a value like your name or Team number), with no variance. Each option MUST be followed immediately by a newline character. If any variance is detected, any work submitted will go ONLY to the "anonymous" folder name, on the "default" team - not to you, or our team!

All initialization options in the command string, MUST have this format: (one space, one hyphen, no space, with no quotation marks), e.g.:
" -verbosity 9", " -forceasm", " -smp", etc. No variances will work.

Wind Down ==> The smp client will need about 10 to 30 seconds to stop the 4 threads and associated programs. Task Manager is the best way to tell if it's all done (right click on an empty part of the bottom Windows task bar, and select "Task Manager"). For Linux, use your System Monitor, or "top" command.

Stats ==> EOC and Kakao have great stats, uploaded every few hours. EOC runs on Central Time. This is my EOC stats page: http://folding.extremeoverclocking.c...y.php?u=169140

Enter your name on the left name search dialog line, when your stats come up, be sure to bookmark that page.
Points will show up only after Stanford has credited them, and the next 3 hour d/l of the raw data, has been made.

At Kakao it's: http://kakaostats.com/usum.php?u=816051, then click on the Donor or Team header. When you locate your page's stats, be sure to bookmark it.

Stanford also has some stats on you, for example: http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/...&username=Adak

Replace "Adak" in the above url, with your folding name, and then bookmark that page. Stanford's stats are unavailable during the first 20 minutes or so of every hour, and occasionally, at other times.

See the sticky at the top of the page, for a LOT of other useful tips.

Happy Folding!

Great tips Adak. I think this smells like sticky material, or atleast added to the Welcome sticky. Either way some of this applies to both the SMP client and the Uni Proc clients.

Good stuff Adak!!! It should be added to the Welcome Sticky... and the Welcome Sticky needs a revamp anyway.

Heh... I never knew the [H] had such a stats page.
