8800 GT vs HD 3870 : Dual Core setup

I had a 3870 briefly and returned it, it just doesnt hold a candle to the 8800GT hehe.

I think that for someone who games in lower resolutions with no/low AA it is a fine card for the money but that just wouldnt be fun for me :)

Go ahead and flame away ATI guys but this was true for me period and I tried it in 2 decent computers hehe.

You do realise that an 8800GT takes a larger performance hit with AA/AF then the 3870(as miniscule as the difference is)?
Do you recognize that an 8800GT is only %3 more powerful?
And you do realise that CrossFire scales better then SLI does, thus making a Dual 3870 setup equal or greater in performance versus dual 8800GTs?
 
Some fanboy posted in the ATI section how the 3870 is actually better than 8800GT, as proof he posted a 'Lightsmark' bench and was all proud of ~140fps. Just out of curiosity, I found and DL'd the same program, and ran it at the same settings as him. 400+ fps.

3870 is a fine card, especially for the money, but the 8800GT is plain ole' better.

This was 3-4 weeks ago when I bought my 3870:

HD3870: $230
8800GT: $290

ATI's card was 20% cheaper then nvidia's, and performs roughly 3% slower (but this depends on OC'ing and what game etc) Is the 8800GT faster? yes but hardly by much, and is ATI's card a better bang for the buck? IMO yes. I have read that alot of resellers have upped the price on their ATI cards lately so this might depend - but in my situation it was a no-brainer.

I'm very interested in this writeup, looking forward to a comparrision with OC'ing etc. I'm sure the 8800Gt is a bit faster, but what reviews I have read so far indicate that crossfire scales better then SLI (http://en.expreview.com/?p=53&page=4)

Anyhow, once Brollocks starts benching and works on this review I'll be first read up on it.

The the 3870 does beat the 8800GT in some benchmarks, same as AMD beats Intel in some benchmarks, but for the overall performance, the 8800GT is faster just as the Core 2 Duo's are faster.
 
HD3870 Xfire > 8800GT SLI > 8800GT > HD3870

That seems to be the current situation according to a lot of benchmarks I've seen.

I will be doing comparisons at 1680 x 1050, finished setting up my bench rig, will start tests after dinner :)

CPU/Mobo/RAM:

E6750 at 3.6 GHz on Abit IP35-E (mild OC on water)
4 x 512 Gigs PC8500 Tracer Ballistix
Vista 32

Video Cards:
BFG 8800 GT OC
Diamond HD 3870
 
I'd take an 8800GT over the hd3870 if I could have actually found a 512mb version for 220$, which was the max amount i could spend. The 8800GT 256 just isn't cutting it according the benchmarks.

3dmark06 isn't completely meaningless and I tyupically see 800 point diff between 8800GT and hd3870 at stock clocks; however, the 8800GT overclocks really well with votlmods. The thing is that the voltmod for hd3870 is pending an ati-tool that can change the voltage. The 3870 at 1000mhz is not as good as the 8800GT at high clocks, but that volt mod will definitely make up some ground.
 
Update...

Running benchies on the 8800 GT, AA really kills this card...have the HD 3870 unpacked, huge cooler...

I switched rigs for the benches to E6850 @ 3.84 on eVGA 680i board with XP Pro and eVGA 8800 GT SC, decided to wipe Vista off the Abit rig and also putting XP on it, I just cannot get a liking in Vista :bang head

Me likes where this thread is going. I wish I could have bought an HD3870. But the Dell MSI 8800GT deal was too good to pass up.... Even though it has been delayed until 12/26/2007.
 
the 8800GT is the better card. Period. Crappy drivers and heat problems, ill pass on the ATI.

I pulled 14xxx with my 8800GT when I ran it at 760/1800/990
 
You ran them in DX9 on High. I was wondering how it pulled better FPS....DX10 will show probably 5-10fps lower than that.

Can't wait to see that final datasheet :)
