As the title says... what are your Folding goals for the year 2008?

My List

#1- Don't let MaxPC pass us!

#2- Fold 4 million points in 2008

1) Maintain my current pace, at the least.
2) Upgrade to Penryn, if it is deemed worth it.
3) Upgrade my dual core linux box to a quad.
4) If I've moved out at some point during the year, add a quad.

Don't know about MaxPC. They're making almost as many points per day as [H], and we've never come close to them in recent times. Suppose we could at least try to prevent an overtake from happening this year.

We also lost ground on OCAU. I remember when Zim was here we got the deficit down to 97 million. It is now back up to 110 million. So we could also try dropping that to sub 100 million.

Yep... that's the idea for MaxPC. Although, we should strive for more... I'd like to see them have to wait. A year is a long time... so anything could happen between now and then.

Also agreed on the second point, let's try to make up some ground on the Aussies.

Setup dedicated file server, to free up the folders
Upgrade all to rackmount except my 2 main rigs, thanks to my new 42U

Continue folding 24/7. Get some more rigs online for T32, even if not for my own PPD gains. And recruit atleast one new team mate. Hopefully this will be enough to help hold off MPC, and catch up to the Aussies.

I was hoping to build a Quad up with the new, less expensive 45nm, (9450?), that was scheduled to be released next month.

Now Intel has decided to hold off on that, since AMD's Tri-Core isn't a threat to them in the marketplace, until possibly 2009. They won't undercut their own premium 45nm Quad unless absolutely necessary.

Looks like a 90nm Quad is back to being the best upgrade. That should push me to 3 million by the end of '08.

Get past 350,000 points.

Currently at 163k points. My only 24/7 rig is my CD T2050 laptop, which can't do SMP (Windows client keeps crashing and I can't use Linux or VMWare for various reasons) and I've got neither the time or the resources to add more to that.

But my main C2D rig folds too, just not 24/7, and I'm going to borg my bro's Toshiba laptop with the C2D T7200 when he gets it. Plus, I've got a couple of friends' and relatives' computers and a few isolated borgs here and there for a total of about a dozen rigs inconsistently contributing to T32.

Laptops are dicey for folding - many just aren't made for hard hours of high intensity use.

Main problem is they may not have the air flow, and/or general thermal design to handle the increased heat. Be careful with it - your bro won't like it if you kill his lappy!

You can set the amount of free cycles that FAH will use, however, with the advanced part of the set up routine. I have a laptop that folds fine at 100%, but the increased heat causes a big increase in fan speed and noise, which drives me to distraction. Just cutting it down to 75%, really is the thing that makes folding on it, palatable.

Yes, I know about issues running 100% full load on laptops. The heatsinks are small and the ventilation space is cramped, they're a lot more susceptible to dust than desktop computers.

The first laptop I started folding on 100% (six hours a day, five days a week) was my dad's Toshiba, and it just shrugged off the extra heat (almost two years now). I am counting on my brother's Toshiba also having a well-designed cooling system.

I originally didn't fold with my laptop because the increased heat production (and resulting hyperactive fan) caused it to suck up so much dust that the thing did random reboots! Temps were over 85 degrees C, until I found a way to routinely suck that dust up - using our household vacuum on the fan vent hole on full power. It worked so well that my laptop now folds at 100% CPU at around 60 degrees C, which I find acceptable (and I can finally feel the air blowing). I do that vacuum treatment once a week now.

None of us really mind the noise, we live in a rather crowded and noisy neighborhood with lots of kids, the noise often gets drowned out. My laptop isn't that noisy when the heatsink isn't clogged, but it gets really loud when its really hot (like 70+ C). Actually, I find that newer Acers have a different cooling system that seems to work much better than mine (while sucking up much less dust).

personally, I don't have much goals left from F@H. I'll just keep on folding and trying to keep up my pace, that's it.

however, as for the team and the F@H project, my goal for 2008 is to offer more help to the team (site, avatar, advice, ppd, etc.) and the F@H project itself (keep folding hard, more tracking apps/add-on, and keep spreading the word!).

oh, I too would like to keep MaxPC at their bay for 2008 too and don't let OCAU run away!!

My only 24/7 rig is my CD T2050 laptop, which can't do SMP (Windows client keeps crashing and I can't use Linux or VMWare for various reasons) and I've got neither the time or the resources to add more to that. But my main C2D rig folds too, just not 24/7, and I'm going to borg my bro's Toshiba laptop with the C2D T7200 when he gets it. Adak Senior Member Join Date: Jan 2006	Laptops are dicey for folding - many just aren't made for hard hours of high intensity use. Main problem is they may not have the air flow, and/or general thermal design to handle the increased heat. Be careful with it - your bro won't like it if you kill his lappy! You can set the amount of free cycles that FAH will use, however, with the advanced part of the set up routine. I have a laptop that folds fine at 100%, but the increased heat causes a big increase in fan speed and noise, which drives me to distraction. Just cutting it down to 75%, really is the thing that makes folding on it, palatable.

The heatsinks are small and the ventilation space is cramped, they're a lot more susceptible to dust than desktop computers. The first laptop I started folding on 100% (six hours a day, five days a week) was my dad's Toshiba, and it just shrugged off the extra heat (almost two years now). I am counting on my brother's Toshiba also having a well-designed cooling system. I originally didn't fold with my laptop because the increased heat production (and resulting hyperactive fan) caused it to suck up so much dust that the thing did random reboots! Temps were over 85 degrees C, until I found a way to routinely suck that dust up - using our household vacuum on the fan vent hole on full power. It worked so well that my laptop now folds at 100% CPU at around 60 degrees C, which I find acceptable (and I can finally feel the air blowing). I do that vacuum treatment once a week now. None of us really mind the noise, we live in a rather crowded and noisy neighborhood with lots of kids, the noise often gets drowned out. My laptop isn't that noisy when the heatsink isn't clogged, but it gets really loud when its really hot (like 70+ C).
