Need ideas on different ways to install Linux

Someone asked me if anything could be done to a pentium 1 133mhz laptop so that it could be used for browsing the internet, I said that I would try and my first idea was to install some light linux on it's small 5gb hdd, but the problem is the bios has a password which I don't know and neither does the owner I opened to remove the battery but it is soldered to the board. So now I need a different way to install any OS on it.

It's a Gateway 2000 Solo
Cd-Rom
5gb HDD
64mb ram
No floppy

Is there an OS on the laptop now?

If so then you can use a method to edit the bootloader to load an ISO.

the problem is that it had a os, win 98 which doesn't boot it crashes halfway through, I'm about to nuke whatever is left on it from my computer because I can't read it anyway.

edit: actually it just got recognized properly, I'll check if I have access to any files.

If you can hit the 'net with the laptop, You can download an installer that you can deploy within Windows, and once rebooted it will continue to install debian.

Goodbye Microsoft

EDIT: Good grief Shell! I really gotta learn to type faster!

Actually, I was looking for a similar 'goodbye' link for ubuntu, but couldn't find it.

You could put DamSmall linux or Puppy Linux they are less that 100Mb in size and have everything for surfing the net and office docs too

In order for that to work, you need to find out what drivers you need for the laptop and make sure they are installed. As most distro's will auto detect what your desktop has. Also you need to use i3/4/586 instead of most distro's default i686 (which is P Pro, came after pentium 1).

Now with such a machine, you might want to look into an old 2.4 kernel Debian install, or maybe even a 2.2 kernel. Also FreeBSD looks good for older system. You'll be forced to use XFCE or Fluxbox for the light weight desktop. Firefox is also out, try Konquer or the other one that Gnome uses by default.

Also there are several text based browsers such as links.

i have an IBM thinkpad 760E with slackware on it. It has a 150mhz cpu, 64mb of ram, 2gb hard drive. I had to do a custom patch to the kernel to get the cardbus to work. Right now it has fluxbox, some browsers, uses ndiswrapper to connect to the wireless. Even though it only uses 20mb of ram on boot and the rest of the 64mb are free, it sure is slow. It's fast for what it is and what it does but it just seems sslow by todays standards.
