Problem with new build, possibly with cpu? Any help would be great!

Ok, so today I built a new pc. The spec is as follows.

Abit IN9 32X Wi-Fi Max Mobo
2x XFX GeForce 8800GT
Intel Core 2 Duo E6850
Corsair XMS2 2gb Ram
Coolermaster 632S Chassis

I tried turning it on, and everything spins, the chassis fans, the fans on the two gpu's, the fan on the cpu heatsink, it even makes a noise like it's coming on. The led's on the motherboard are on and the LED display is functioning although it doesn't give me a code that I can use to diagnose the problem as 'A0' isn't in the manual. However, there is no display on the connected monitor, it simply doesn't realise something wants it's attention.

I have already tried the following things:-
1. Trying new memory. Still a problem.
2. GFX cards work in a different machine.
3. Tried only using one gfx card.

I can only assume it may be a faulty cpu or motherboard, but with parts this expensive I'm doubting that aswell. I can't test the cpu in another pc as I don't have another 775 socket mobo knocking around.

Any diagnoses or ways to attempt to fix this problem would be greatly appreciated! Thanks a lot.

I had to reset CMOS on a new board last night. Just sat spinning fans and did nothing. Power OFF on the PSU, move the CMOS reset to the clear position, count to three then move it back. Power back up, set clock etc.

I had the same problem last night, spins but no boot....argh don't you hate that?

I tried resetting the CMOS, reseating my video card, unplugged the power cables, reseated my memory sticks, nothing. I changed the cable on my hard drive, and voila, it booted up. Strange that a cable could cause the whole system to fail to boot even into the CMOS, but there you have it.

Here's the crack. I reset my cmos, got a vga signal. Went through and booted vista, at the end of the install it powers off and then when I re power up I get the same as before. Spinny fans but nothing on screen. Then when I reset my cmos again I'm back to square one.

Maybe it could be something to do with the bios? The motherboard was released before the cpu so that could have something to do with it maybe. Any idea how I could update the bios from this position? If this fails I'l do what orion456 suggested and just use different sata cables and see if that solves anything, although admittedly, I can't see why it would.

Update you BIOS to the newest version. You should be able to do this from a floppy, CD or flash drive.

This is where I'd like to be treated as a pretty n00b builder. I've built systems before, quite a few, and am experienced enough to rarely make mistakes but I've never before updated a bios before the OS is on. At this stage I cannot access Windows Vista, even tho it is installed on my HD (I think). I have the system discs that come with the mobo but apart from that I wouldn't really know how to go about this. This is new pastures for me I'm afraid. Thanks for all your help by the way people, I'm getting closer with every message that is sent my way.

For reference, my mobo is the one on this webpage.

Head here and download the first one in the list. Then there should be an exe to run to create a BIOS update disk. I am assuming you have a second computer running that you can use to create the disk. I am not sure but it will prob want a floppy. Once your disk is made set that disk as you first boot device on the problem computer. Boot the computer to the disk and follow the on screen prompts. DO NOT POWER OFF DURING THE FLASH!!!

http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/down...ET_TYPE=LGA775

Edit: They have a guide on how to flash the BIOS from your download:

http://www2.abit.com.tw/page/en/download/guide.php

That page is linked from the initial link I posted. They also mention a seperate flash utility you may need to DL off the page above.

Oh and also for future refrence: Flashing BIOS from Windows is VERY VERY VERY risky. One windows hiccup and the board is toast. I would suggest you flash with the methods listed in the guide above to avoid possible problems in the future.

There any way of doing it with a cd? I tried to do it just by burning the extracted files to a cd but no cigar. It just tries to go thru to vista. I don't actually have a floppy installed on either and have one overall but can't really be arsed to do it when it says "BIOS v13 1.Enhanced compatibility with SATA DVD ROM."

Talk me through it. Sorry for being a dork.

You can do it from a CD but first you need a bootable CD image to put the contents of the flash utility and bios file on. I would just use a floppy it will be much easier.

I guess it's your heatsink that's not installed correctly. It's easy to do that misstake with intels stock HSF. And this problem usualy don't give you an error code and everything you have explained in your post.

Reset the HSF is my tip. Sometimes it can do magic. I'd do this before trying to update BIOS, because if this is the problem your mobo will end up with a corrupt BIOS as it's shutting down at random time when overheated.

Check the CPU-temp in your BIOS before, ofcourse.

Have you tried manually selecting the video card boot priority in the BIOS menu?

Before you flash, get your current BIOS revision, do some homework before flashing to the latest and greatest. Other versions might offer better flexibility or feedback.

It is defo the bios out of date. 1333fsb cpu's only become compatible on Bios V.12 on the mobo and it's factory shipped at V.1. Not keen. I'll get a floppy disc tomorrow and hopefully this will all be over.

By the way, sk1llz, the heatsink was and still is attached just fine.
