spring break trip to puerto rico. thoughts?

For those of you who don't know, check out www.couchsurfing.com. I was thinking it'd be cool to try this but during the semester there's not really much time. So, I was thinking for spring break (which is mon-fri so i could leave the friday or saturday that break starts and then stay until maybe sunday or monday of the week after spring break) I could buy a plane ticket to Europe and just cruise around and see stuff (I live in the U.S.). Then I was thinking it'd be even better if I brought some friends. So, I've now got two--maybe three--friends from college who want to go.

I checked the prices and it seems a round-trip ticket to Europe is about $750. I can do this but the less money we spend on tickets the more we have to spend once we get there.

So... I now took a look at San Juan, Puerto Rico. It's $300 for a ticket and PR being American, it has some advantages: can use USD, don't need a passport, and cellphones still work.

Although, since we've got three or four people who are going now and we'll be there for 7-10 days, I don't know if we'll be able to do the couch surfing thing since we might not be able to find someone who'd want to put us up that long. We might have to do something else for lodging then.

Also note, I don't party/drink/drugs so that stuff is out.

It looks like PR has enough stuff to do:
  • Old San Juan
  • Rainforest
  • beaches
  • secluded beaches
  • bioluminescent bay
  • horseback riding on some trails I think in the rainforest
  • kayaking on bio-bay

Does anyone know if there is a place to go bungee-jumping in PR?

Also, we're all 18 so I don't think we'll be able to rent a car (On the mainland you can't rent unless you're 25; does anyone know if it is different in PR?)

So, anyone got thoughts on this? Reasons we shouldn't/should go? Things to do there? Another destination we should consider?

PR sounds like an excellent plan, although you have omitted snorkeling. You really need to get some in. Additionally, the dollar is pretty weak at this time so I would say not the best time to go Euro.

When I was 16 I had saved up almost $4,000 . That summer I had a choice, 2 weeks in Spain or a decent car. Guess which one I chose.

You only live once so if you can get to PR go for it. Puerto Varejata (SP?) is just as nice too. Just make sure you do not drink the local tap water, and only drink bottled water that has not had its seal broken.

Aside: I chose Spain and ended up putting the motor in my first car. I still never have regretted that decision though.
