insert system disk error

i just moved my system from my benching rig to my new wood case and now i keep getting an insert system disk error i tried to re install xp but after the formatting i got an error message that the disk could not be formatted. i swapped in a different hdd (the ride to school is a known hdd killer) and tried again now i get windows cant find xxx.dll press esc to skip. the only way i can continue is to skip it but when it finishes loading all the dll's and reboots i still says insert system disk and press enter. the only thing that has changed is i dont have the abit ide cable that came with the board i left it at home on my benching rig and have tried several others any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance.

what i have already tried
♠changing jumpers
♠changed ide cables one had a missing section of wire (but still worked?)
♠cleared cmos
♠ tried other cd/dvd drives including the one i from my benching station
♠tried different xp disks, 64 bit, home, student 07

my system
♠abit IP 35-e
♠q6600
♠billistx ddr2 800
♠bfg 8800 gt
