8800 GTS 512mb gone Mad

OK this is kinda hard to explain but I will do my best to throw it out there and get some ideas.

I built a new system a few weeks ago which is in my sig. A couple of days after I got it together I got horrible artifacting. Worse than I have ever seen. It was while I was loading COD4.

Once it loaded it was so bad you could not hardly read the start up screen. Well then when I would turn the computer on and off I was getting a purpleish looking screen. The more I would turn it on the worse it would get. I could load other games like BF2 and they looked ok but would have the purple looking screen when it first start and would crash soon afterwards.

Then it got to the point where I could not even get past the windows loading screen and my screen would just go blank. I thought ok the new card is dead. I boxed it up for RMA. Well I got to thinking about the fact I did not want to go without a computer until they got the card back so I installed it again and it finally picked it up as new hardware again and worked fine just like new. Well a couple of weeks have gone by and it did it again last night and it was while starting COD4 again.

I did the samething as before which was uninstall and reinstall the drivers take the card in and out and got the same problems. Well I finally left the card out for a while and installed it again and it picked it up as new hardware and once its working fine.

MY question is does anyone have any idea whats going on or has anyone heard this? Is it a problem with the card itself or is it a problem with drivers? I am thinking drivers do to the fact it works again after I get it to pickup as a new card. Both times it has done this it was loading COD4. Any known issues with COD4. I googled but have not found anything.

The only thing I know from the mess up last night I clicked on the single player icon which requires the disc but it was not in and gave me an error that the disc must be installed. However it looked fine loading. Since I meant to click on the multi icon anyway when I went to it when it loaded it gave me all the crazy looks.

I had a friend attempt the same thing just to see and he had no problems. However he is on windows xp and tunning the 640mb version. I am on vista and running the 512mb version

Any Ideas???

I do not think this is related to the icon or any game as such, try the following to attempt a root cause finding:
  • Change the video cable going to the monitor if you can
  • Change monitor if you have one
  • make sure the card is properly seated in the PCI-e slot
  • if you have another PCI-e vid card put that in and see if you get the same problem

If you have tried the above let us know and we can progress from there

Well lets go down the list...

1) what PSU are you running?
2) Do you water cool? If so, have you had any leaks on your motherboard?
3) what are the temps of your graphics card?
4) Have you overclocked your CPU or GPU, if so, to what clocks?
5) What are your CPU temps?
6) Have you tried using a different video card? If so, what were the results?

I have no problems with COD4 and the 8800 GTS 512. With the clocks in the sig., I have played COD4 for 8h straight before and not a single hiccup.

to answer some questions
Well lets go down the list...

1) what PSU are you running? Actually a dual system main is and ocz 700 watt gaming and my fans and such are running off a 500 watt ultra

2) Do you water cool? If so, have you had any leaks on your motherboard?
no not yet ran out of money

3) what are the temps of your graphics card?
I have not really checked them. I know shame on me but it does it afte the card had been out of the maching for 10 or 15 minutes and cool to the touch.

4) Have you overclocked your CPU or GPU, if so, to what clocks?
All stock right now

5) What are your CPU temps?one core runs about 15c the other about 17c

6) Have you tried using a different video card? If so, what were the results?
No I have not. This is my first new rig in several years and all my extra stuff is AGP.

As for cables and a different monitor yes I have both. That I can check and will next time it does it if it does it again. Its strange one windows will finally reconize it as new hardware after I take the card out a few times it will work fine.

As for being plugged in good yes thats the first thing I checked. Also to get it back working I have to take the card in and out serveral times when it does this. I have also hooked power from the other power supply to see if that might have been the problem.

Thanks for the help on this one it has me baffled. I hate to RMA the card and be without my system and find out there is nothing wrong with the card. I wold just think if the card was bad it would do it all the time but I know about enough about computers to get in trouble

Download RivaTuner 2.06 Check your temps here.

Download GPU-Z

Check to make sure everythin glooks in order, clocks, volts, correct chip Id, etc etc.

First check out you card using GPU-Z, make sure all is in order.

Then fire up riva tuner, open up the hardware monitor, chekc your temps.

Run 3dmark06 (or a game) and alt tab out after a minute or two and check the temps again.

Still trying to figure out how to check the temps. I got riva tuner but can't find them in it.

Interesting.

This is what my EVGA 8800 GTS(G92) 512 MB looks like. Please note the default Clock and Shader speeds:

Regarding how to check vid card's temps and set up fan and OC profiles, please see this tut. IMO, it is the best out there.

Thanks for the info. I am at work now but I will see what I can figure out when I get home. I see some difference in the fillrate as well.

I think eVGA OC's their cards from the factory. My eVGA came at 670 core also.

The default speeds of core/shader/memory of most of the GTS' are different so that is certaily not the issue here.
Unless you hook up another vid card or change monitors you are not doing a proper root cause analysis, start with the hardware 1st before you look at software side

Well I have use rivatuner in the past and found the setting with no problems. This is the first time in a while I have used it and I thought maybe they moved somethings around but after readin the directions you posted I see why I can't find the temp settings. They don't exist on my computer. I have uninstalled it and reinstalled it a couple of time. Here is a picture of what mine gets. I only have the options outlined in red. The other do not show up for me including the one for the video card. The good news is the card is still running fine.
