Thought I had seen it all..........

Until I saw THIS. I was just checking out the thread saying "Ever Feel Like Your Intel... since I had given it a good little bump the other day, from not even showing up with out really digging. I came across this post:

At first I thought it was a joke, or maybe a misspelling of SETI. Turns out it is a real DC project, but the latest news on the page seems to be about Y2K compliance, so who knows how old it is. It looks like CW is working on trying to recruit him. I may just jump in.

This is the part I find funny...

By mapping not only the Pacific Northwest, but wooded and non-wooded areas across the entire planet, YETI@Home will be the largest completely unscientific study of nonexistent phenomenon to date.

I had made a thread a few weeks ago about pointless Distributed Computing programs. If I had known about it, this would have made the list.

Edit: After thinking about it, it seems anything with "ETI@Home" in it is nearly pointless.

How does the software connect to the local servers?
While the process is far more complex than we can describe here, it's basically like this: The software will use your computer's modem to dial into the nearest local server to begin second stage processing. If the server is busy, the server will answer the phone and play a short message, signalling your computer to check the next nearest server until it finds an available server. There are currently three local servers, located in Rekjavik, Minsk, and Honolulu, Hawaii, which we anticipate to be very busy.

If the servers are very busy, this process could take several hours. It cannot be interrupted. Once connected to a server, the software automatically will begin the upload process. This will take several hours and cannot be interrupted. For security purposes, after the upload is complete, the process is begun again for the verification. Two verification passes are required for validation of the data and image.

Do not be alarmed if you see these calls appearing on your phone bill, it's simply YETI@Home working. (Be reassured that it only does this when it has a positive ID, or once a week to check for an automatic software update).
I love this part. Makes me happy that Stanford is smart enough to use the internet connection. I really hope like crazy that this page is nothing but a joke. Anyone thought about giving it a try?

It's a parody on SETI dude... they're saying looking for little green men (that they believe don't exist) is about as pointless as looking for a yeti (which doesn't exist) in your back yard.

LOL jokes on me I guess. The way it looked from the post in the Intel section almost made me start to wonder. I was hoping it was some kind of joke. Looked like CW fell for it too. LOL Atleast I wasn't the only one.

Haha I didnt even read the information of how it works. Look at the last part where it says it will dial phone numbers and not to worry about it running up your telephone bill...haha!

You were out in the sun too long again Deadly. Weren't you?

There are a couple memorable ones on our old thread. Like when Nik asks what folding is and someone actually explains it to him.

I'll admit it, I work out side and it has been sunny lately, but still cold. LOL

I think I remember seeing the post where Nik asked what folding was. I about started ROFL. It would almost be like ChasR asking how he could get more PPD. The funny thing is Nik's Av hasn't changed, and still stays Please FOLD! in bright green lettering on it. I guess whoever tried explaining it was paying about as much attention as I have been.

I like this word. Cryptozoology.

"We, the YETI team members who founded this experiment, are experts in the field of cryptozoology (the study of animals that do not exist)."
