Hey guys, Finally, Dual-Core 45nm technology is officially available since a few days already, and for over-clocking those baddies are the days to come! I was inspired by ghost_recon88's post in the currently popular E8400 thread, and so I decided to start a "proper" thread for reports on over-clocking and the results you guys come up with, either with your lovely E8400 or E8500. The reports should be written in the following format (note that all images will be welcome, as far as it concerns your OC attempts hehe!): Code:
CPU: ES/Retail: Batch #: Ship/Packaging Date: Voltage(s) (Stock/OC'ed): Frequency(ies) (OC'ed): Motherboard: BIOS: ----- *Extra* Memory(ies) (Timing(s)): *Extra* Memory(ies) (Voltage(s)): *Extra* Third Party Cooling Solution: *Extra* Paste(s)/Compound(s)/Other(s): ----- Additional Comment(s): Enjoy! ![]()

Around that zone, VCore needs to go up exponentially for Prime stability. I can go a fair amount higher and Prime for 20 minutes, but not full 8 hours.

Might have some more speed in her yet

Updated 2/8 Updated 2/9 CPU: E8400 ES/Retail: Retail Batch #: Q744A760 Ship/Packaging Date: 1/11/08 Voltage(s) (Stock/OC'ed): Don't remember/1.2V Frequency(ies) (OC'ed): 3.6 (450x8) Motherboard: Abit IP35 Pro BIOS: v14 ----- *Extra* Memory(ies) (Timing(s)): Stock *Extra* Memory(ies) (Voltage(s)): Stock *Extra* Third Party Cooling Solution: Scythe Ninja *Extra* Paste(s)/Compound(s)/Other(s): IC7 ----- Additional Comment(s): ![]() 2/8 Update I'm another one with stuck temps until load. Coretemp has mine at 45°C consistently. At stock, under Prime95, I get load temps of ~46/51. Pretty nice. Except it doesn't stay that way .Anyway, was going to test the limits of my memory at stock timings, but couldn't get memtest to boot for some reason, so I went with 450FSB as a reasonable OC for my ramchips. Stock (auto) vcore was enought at 7x multi (3150). 8x multi wouldn't boot to windows at auto stock, so raised to 1.275 (vdroops to 1.17 or so) and booted. Failed prime95 badly, raised vcore to 1.325 (1.22 vdroop - current setting). Now running for >1.5 hours and looking good. Except for load temps. 57/61 in Coretemp. That's a 10°C rise over temps at stock . Of course, we all know the temp sensors are having issues, but still. Now having that info in mind...goal is to get to 4050 with a vcore below 1.275 drooped. Should be doable, if others with my batch are any indication ![]() Still don't like the temps. 2/9 Update Tried to push upwards today, so went to 9x430. Was not prime stable at 1.325 BIOS. Was not stable 1.375 BIOS. Was stable at 1.405 (1.29/1.30 with droop). Temps shot up to 61/65. Essentially I'm will not vcore any higher until I can get accuarate temp readings (or at least get confirmation my load temps are being reported correctly, if they are that high). So now 450x8 at 1.305 in BIOS (1.2 with droop) and probably staying that way until Abit releases a new official BIOS. Or until I get around to flashing to 16b9. I really don't like those temps.

Conroes with high VID often didnt respond well to vcore increase, looks like thats true also for 45nm, but i only played with it for 30-40 minutes so far and dont have much more time for now, later again. Edit 3: No way to get it prime stable at 4.2 with less than 1.425v. Load temps are 52/52. EDIT 4: Need 1.45v now, and corrected a typo, vdimm is 2.25v (obviously for some, would be hard to run these timings on only 2.15). I dont know whats going on with the vCore, sometimes temps are like 56 and sometimes around same as i had on 1.425v. Maybe i need to try activating the voltage damper for a few days, this could be a board problem. Max OC tested so far: 9x480 = 4.32GHz, vcore 1.525. Last edited by th3; 01-29-08 at 09:27 AM. |

Not sure about the temps though its cold in here 64F currently so I should be safe to play with the OC, going to crank her up here in a sec. Hey HousERat, look at that batch numbers very close to each other only 8 away. Edit: Updated 1-24-08 7:16PM Still running got it up to 4.05Ghz with some playing on the memory settings since thats what killed me before. CoreTemp finally started giving me readings at 3.6Ghz with 1.3V set bios I was getting 44-48C and now with 4.05Ghz with 1.37V set bios im getting much closer temps at 51-53C. I like it Warmer than my other chip but also much faster so what can I complain about I'll do prime testing here over night if it works at these settings, then work on it from there since I want to game a bit tonight ![]() ![]()

Running at 3.8GHz so far, having had a lot of time to play with the settings, hopefully I can hit 4GHz again.

Oh my god... I'm trading my Q6600(G0) for one of these! Shure 3GHz is fun, but 4GHz is crazy fun! Mabe I'll wait... but It's going to be hard, soo many gigahertz... GIGAHERTZ! No, no... I MUST wait... I can't take advantage of such power until a new video card comes out... how long until a better video card? How long until IMC comes to Intel? How long until AMD whips out something good? Is clock for clock performance really greater with this against a 65nm, 4MB C2D? Soo many questions... the answers must be known... Mabe I'll just get a 3870X2 with good memory and forget about these amazing processors altogether until there's a new architecture. /crazy moment

Shell yes clock per clock performance is better than the 65nm ones You must change now mwahahahah

Mail me an 8400, I mail you a q6600... mabe a few $ to go with it... Hmm, I don't have heat... never needed it until now... I'm going to see my friends are up on the deal first... How much of a clock for clock increase is there? If it's =>%5 I'm jumping on it, otherwise I'm better sticking quadcore because more and more games are supporting quad, and most of my programmes already do.

However heat goes up 10c under load with the added .1v to 58-60C load temps. ![]() And before anyone asks, yes I can run 4.2Ghz with my FSB at 525. Memory is at 1050Mhz with 5-5-5-15 timings (might be able to tighten them, have not fooled much). As you can see though the superPi times are .4 seconds slower with the higher memory speeds, yet looser timings and higher FSB. Interesting. ![]()
