do i have to open and close the cmd box for the next WU to process?

No, the client will wait for 3-4 minutes, and then proceed on. Rarely, it hangs, but that's mostly not really "hanging", it's impatient folders THINKING that it's hung. 
If nothing has happened after four minutes, I'd consider lowering your O/C a bit, and of course, closing the client out with Ctrl-c, (the only way to safely close a folding window), and re-starting it.
