remote desktop error

Since I don't have a keyboard for my file server, decided to use windows remote desktop. Don't know if this goes in here or the windows section, but whenever I try it I get the error "the FREAKDIABLO (yeah I set the workgroup to freakdiablo) domain/workgroup does not contain any terminal servers". I have receive all incoming remote connections checked on the server and I can see it both in my network places and workgroup computers as well as transfer files back and fourth. I followed the guide on the microsoft site, but nothing. Is there some service I should have active? Ive been using logmein for the past week or so but with my internet connection (3mbps down/300kbps up) its kind of painful and it should have to go out then come back in.

Have you considered installing and running tightVNC server on the fileserver, and tightVNC viewer on the local PC? At least you wouldn't have to go out and then come back in.

Why buy a wired/wireless router, or a Wi-fi Access Point? Harness the power of your old PC for free, instead.

RDP only works in a domain environment by default, but you can reg hack it so it will work in a workgroup.

No, I don't know this off the top of my head. I cheated.

Remote Desktop Connection will work whether the PC is in a domain or a workgroup. I can even connect to other computers that are not on my workgroup. It isn't purely a domain thing, as i do not have any of my computers in a domain, and yet it works without a hitch

BUT

you will need a passworded user to log in as or you get the error as described

It is on, but remote connections are on the exceptions list. Ill just give tightVNC a try like dice suggested.

edit: yeah, guess Ill be using tight VNC.

I like VNC only because I don't like the login/logout requirement of RDP. I use UltraVNC

Sounds like it is solved for you freakdiablo?

I have not tried ultraVNC yet, will have to look into it. I like tightVNC because it is what I learned on and it makes VNC tunneled in SSH simple. Maybe it is simple because of my familiarity with it? Iunno, still going to check out ultraVNC.

are you trying to connect via hostname or IP address? us the IP

do a netstat -an to verify the box is listening on 3389

from another box from a command prompt type
telnet (ip address of server) 3389
replace (ip of server) with the ip address

if it connects and your command prompt screen goes blank you know you have connectivity on 3389 and the issue is with RDP settings.... if it says connection failed you know its network / firewall settings
