Overclock is not a word!

at least according to the forum spell checker :P

If you type the word "overclock" in a post it gets underlined in red (marked as spelled incorrectly). If any forums would have "overclock" as a valid word, I would think it would be these. Not a big deal, I just thought it was kind of funny.

It isn't a word... It's made up...

And I don't think OCF can do anything about firefox's spellchecker...

Unless we get overclock added to the dictionary (win)

It's listed at Dictionary.com (and the definition seems a little dated, ):

Unfortunately Merriam-Webster does not recognize it...yet.

Doh! It is a Firefox thing, I feel like an idiot. I guess I have been on Firefox so long and been on OCForums so long that I thought the forum had added a spell checker somewhere along the line.

Sorry guys :/

Theres an annoying "law" in linguistics that states if a majority of people use a certain word, or spelling/usage/pronunciation etc, it becomes "standard". Ive fought with my linguistics lecturers for the past 3 years as it annoys the hell out of me, but alas, it is there..

Imo, Overclock is a word. It's a lexeme, and although its used by a comparatively small group of people, it is understood by most people with slight to moderate understanding of pcs - and in this day and age, thats a fair few people.

Just my 0.02 though.

I don't know I gave a speech on overclocking (undergrad general speech class) and there were LOTS of blank faces.

Yeah, I agree. I was thinking the OC Forums had a build in spell checker that didn't recognize overclock as a word and thought it was strange. I realize now that it was just Firefox's built in spell checker.

It's funny that this thread turned into a discussion of whether or not overclock is a word, hehe. Maybe I should have chosen a different title.
