x38 vs p35

I am shucking the old and building. Been out of the loop due to the massive WC'ing in my current pc so i never wanted to upgrade. I am trying to save a little money and could find a solid answer to this question. Am I going to suffer much going p35 over x38. I plan to go with an 8800 and 4 gb of ram. Some OC'ing of coarse. Would love some tryed and tested board suggestions. I am getting a headache reading newegg reviews. Thanks everyone.

Only thing you'll be missing is 2x real x16 slots.
But you will still have x16 + x4 slot for CF (p35) (if you choose a p35 with dual x16 slots). The p35 is a greater overclocker thou, think many will agree on that.

So... You won't be missing anything out except real CF performance, so if you're not going dual gpu's, you'll be fine. Thou CF will perform just fine with p35 too.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. If you aren't going Crossfire, there's no need to go with an X38 board and you can find some good values in P35 boards now.

Two P35 boards I have personal experience with and recommend are the Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L and GA-P35-DS3R boards. They overclock very well out the box and no clearance issues with aftermarket hsf mounting. But they do only have 1 physical 16x pci-e slot though, so there is no chance of going with a CF setup later with them if you wanted to try that out.

I went with the Abit IP35 Pro board so I could get more out of my Q6600. I had no plans to use CF and then I just bought a NVIDIA card so this board works great for me.

Not to hijack the thread, but is there a huge difference in crossfire between the two?

I wouldn't think so actually. I've been testing out x4 vs x16 in singlemode only. An 8600GT and an 8800GT. Overall performance loss is maxmimum 10%. So i would think you'll lose the same if using CF.

If you're going with an 8800, then get a P35 for sure. There's no reason to spend the premium to have the "best" Crossfire capability if you're not even planning on going Crossfire.

I was in the same boat and went with this board:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...3&Tpk=p35-t2rs

Absolutely love it.

I know there's no grand plan here. This is just the way it goes.

personally I have a p35-ds3r and a 3870x2 on order right now, I wont be able to add a 2nd x2, but I didn't plan on have 900 bucks into video card anyway. The p35 boards are significantly cheaper for no performance loss as long as you aren't trying to run 2 vid cards. If you're buying nvidia, don't bother with an x38 board as you still can't run 2 even on the x boards.

Did I find a new love in the P35?

I been waiting on my spanking new, P35 (DS3L) to tell me the E2200 sitting @3.3 is wrong. Yes for now stock air... Then I will break out the big cooling stuff. The wide FBS is nice.
