I didn't want to jack someone else's thread, and I'm just curious really. Why does Vista complain if a DC project such as FAH or SETI is installed into the Program Files folder? Is this something caused by UAC, a bug in Vista, or just Microsoft being overly restrictive?

Vista's just really anal about stuff being in the Program Files folder. Ergo, it's a feature. So yes, it's just MS being overly restrictive.

That seems odd. Is it only an SMP thing? I just installed Vista Ultimate just the other day, and have been running FAH out of the Program Files folder with no problems. But I have UAC turned off, and added the line to the registry to turn off it's notifications.

I'm not sure which part of Vista causes the problems (the only time I use it is when I borrow the bro's laptop), but I think it's got something to do with UAC.

/rant (extended)

It's like in XP we got that, "You should not be dinking with the Windows Folder, are you sure you want to view the files?", and you could turn that crap off and fire away doing whatever you please.

Now with Vista you can turn UAC off but they still lock down certain Folders on your file system because M$ thinks everyone is ignorant of their file system.

Until I can work around those types of issues... I'm sticking with my XP.

/end rant

Same here. One Vista rig that won't hook up to my home network, unless I install some MS security software on every other computer, is all I can stand.

I was given a copy of Vista Business edition last year, it was pretty, but for one thing I grew tired of hearing it thrash my drive all of the time, so I gave it back and went back to XP x64 Edition. I'm happy, things work.

Vista is a memory hog. Unless you have 2GB of memory or more, it's going to continually hit your pagefile on the hard drive when running multiple applications.

But it's easy to work around Vista's additional security. Most people see UAC as a nag, and so disable it. Or you can install the client in to C:\Users\<username>\FAH and it won't have any problems.

The best I/O is no I/O.

Sounds like I should stay away from Vista, then.
