First Time Car Insurance

Hey guys,

I'm looking into getting added as secondary driver on my Dad's Geico Policy.

The added cost for me is:
1962.20 6 month premium

$327.03 Per Month

Don't have the exacts of the policy in front of me but it's full coverage, I believe $0 deductible glass, road side assistance, $250 deductible.

I've had my license since the end of December 07'. I'm 17 for 2 more months...

Does this seem about right as far as price?

How much do you guys think it will go up once I get my own car(I know it depends on the type of car lets say a $20k safe 4 dr car)?

Ah yes, good old fashioned legal discrimination: car insurance. My favorite subject.

You're young and you're a guy. Automatically, you're going to get raped on insurance. Assuming you have no tickets and no accidents, that does seem pretty high. When I got my first car at 18 (97 Malibu in Feb. 2000, two months before I turned 19), I was on my mom's policy with Farmers and I was paying $140 per month. That $1900 you're paying sounds more like a yearly premium. Even if it that price was both of you together for 6 months, that still seems pretty outrageous.

It's going to depend on a lot of things though. The specific type of car, driving record, driving experience, type of coverage, deductible amounts (yours are pretty low, which means higher premium) and other things. Details as they currently are though, that seems way off.

Holy Fracking Bejeebus Cripes!!!! When I was 16 in 1992, I had a 1987 Dodge Daytona Shelby Z Twin Turbo and only paid $140 a month for it. Something is definitely WRONG!

Dude...I live in NJ (highest insurance in country) and I pay less than that ($213 /mo) for 2 FULLY INSURED financed cars. (02 Toyota Highlander and 03 Dodge Caravan.) I also am only 24, with a few tickets on my record for speeding/illegal turn. My wife is 34 but she has a suspension on her record.

Didn't you want to enlist at some point? USAA (military only) provides some of the best/cheapest auto insurance in the country on top of customer service out of this world. Which is the only way I survive. At the time, even GEICO was quoting me over $3k for 6 months!!!!

Also, the less safety features on your car/probability for survivability and damage will raise your rates dramatically. I had a Plymouth NEON before and it was costing more than either of my current vehicles.

When I got my first insurance it was 492.99 quoted by Geico and 456 quoted by progressive for a 2000 mustang (purple).

Best bet is to try and become a seconday driver on the car and let someoen else be primary. It will grealy reduce your incurance

My rate is about ~$800 per half a year with my parents. (was ~$400 before I was added. They have a perfect driving record.....) So that's $800 for year for me that was added... insurance is allstate. That is for a '98 Camry car, liability only.

*shrugs* Just don't get into any accidents. One accident = $200 yearly raise.

Ouch man. What kind of car is that?

I'm 19, have a 2000 Cavalier, a Suzuki Katana GSX 600F, and a Honda CX500 and I pay ~$150 a month in insurance. Admittedly all are PLPD...

It could be to be perfectly honest your deductible. If you change the deductible from $250 to $1K it'll probably drop the annual price by at least $700-$1K

For my 96 Grand Am SE when I first got on my parents policy...it ran me $90 a month, turned 18 and went down to $60 a month. I was with Farm Bureau at the time...once I bought my new car, my policy went up to $168 a month, full coverage with a $500 deductable, got T-Boned and moved out of home, they wanted $260+ a month! Not even so much for my accident...but simply because full coverage on a 19 year old with a sports car.

I'm now with a company called Unitrin Direct...full coverage quoted from them is roughly $120. Liability only which I'm paying is $60 a month for me due to previous history with an insurance company and no lapse in coverage.

1) Shop around
2) Check out any other deals such as good student discount (3.0 gpa and above) and good driver form (its like where u pledge not to drink and drive safely at a reduction of your insurance, but if you get pulled over or get in a crash thats your fault, it goes away).

I pay $120/mo right now and I'm 19. I used to pay $160/mo when I was 17.

<--22, 10 year old honda civic, state farm

My last 6 month car payment was 450ish I believe. State farm took a lot of money off through a program they have where if you have a certain grade point average (B average I think).

Yeah the good student discount takes 10% off but when I sent them my transcript screenshot they saw that I only had 10 credits last semester and it's only for full-time students..

It's a 2006 Dodge dakota 4 dr, this quote is as a second driver for my dads truck..

Wow I just went and did a quote for kicks assuming my dad's truck as mine and I would be the primary driver and got these results...

Don't forget your area, age of car, features on car (even daytime running lights reduces it) and type of coverage has a major effect on it. (I notice some people don't specify whether they have minimum or full)

I've always wondered if credit score was a factor for some companies. Anyone know?

YAY, this thread makes me feel good about myself.

I've never paid over 700 bucks for 6 months on my family's car insurance (in ohio I was covered under our 3 cars, although all were decent nothing expensive). That was 2+ years ago. Now I have a honda 2002 with 350 bucks for 6 months .

Next year I'll have to add a gtr or s5 though

I have sqweegy clean driving record though.

ah, it's because it's a newer truck. Pick up a early to mid 90s honda or toyota with 120+K miles for < $2K, and you'll find that that would be ~$600ish a month, plus you could get PLPD as opposed to full coverage.

Us younguns oughta drive beaters! That's why I have a $800 Cavalier haha.

you took me down memory lane.

my second car was a 89 Shelby turbo with the digital dash. Boy do I miss that car. It was the first major thing I can truly say I bought on my own.

Elif,

my first was a 83 Cavalier. They aren't called beaters for nothing. I actually miss having a car, that I did not care if anything happened to it.

I have an 87 Crown Vic LTD and through Horace Mann i pay about $22.00 a month for it for insurance. I'm 25. It dropped from $36 a month the day i turned 25 back in December.

Realize, it isn't full insurance, just full-liability, towing, and medical up to $1,500 or something like that. I went to an insurance broker looking for the best deal and they found me Horace Mann. None of the 'big guys' would insure my car seeing as how it's over 20 years old. It wasn't worth the risk to them. However, seeing as how I am required by state law to have it, I went with a company (horace man)that was willing to 'take the risk' on my old car, and that will pay to replace my vehicle up to it's full dealer value (about $2,000 is what they told me), which is more than enough for me to get a used car/truck around here and pay taxes on it and still have money left over to pay a few months of insurance if i wanted.

my parents have the same exact insurance on all of their cars (they have 3) and when one of my brothers was in a bad wreck in one of them (a car came up the exit ramp he was getting off, head-on at about 60mph as it was halfway down the ramp), even with only 'liability', they still fully replaced my parents' vehicle 3 days later with a newer model of the same vehicle! (went from like a '97 dodge caravan to a 2003 model).

I can't say no to an insurance company willing to do that for you, especially with the prices i pay. My wife has her own policy for her car through them... and it took her a while to get her premiums down as she's been in 7 wrecks.... but she has gone from $150 a month down to $30 a month in about 3 years of time with them and no wrecks in that time period.
