USB Keeps freezing my computer

Ok, this never happened to me when I was using my copy of windows xp sp1 but I got a copy of sp2 recently and everytime I plug in a usb device thats not a mouse or keyboard, it freezes my system. I have no idea what the problem is but I have updating the drivers and everything. I had initially thought that I had shorted out my front panel connections but it seems that the usb straight out of my motherboard doesnt work either. My main problem is when I connect my mp3 player, which is a ums device and detected as a mass storage drive, its ok if i dont use the player, but once I start transferring files then it freezes. Any help is appreciated, especially since I've been stuck with the same music for the past two months.

I'm pretty sure what's happening (as with most hard freezes in computers of the last 4 years or so) is that your computer is experiencing a powerdip when trying to initialize the port. Unfortunately, while I can identify the problem I have no solution to offer other that updating drivers which is what you've already tried.

See if maybe there's some bios function that causes your ports to revert to a lower power or unpowered state when not in use and disable it.

I just went back to sp1 and everything works fine so far. I think its a computability issue with my motherboard and sp2 so I guess I'm stuck with sp1 until I do a full system upgrade. My other option was to get a pci-usb card since that has a separate controller on it but I decided to save the money and just keep using my old copy of sp1. No recent games for me but at least I get to update my playlists now.

Edit: Looks like I spoke too soon. Right after I finished typing this post my computer froze again after I attached a thumb drive. Guess I have to start messing with drivers now.

Looks like i diagnosed it back to a cpu problem. I swapped out my opty 170 back to my old venice and it looks like everything works fine :knock on wood:
