Thoughts on the Gskill memory for new system..

I'm putting together a new box with:

Q6600
Asus P5K premium
8800GTS

I plan to OC the chip anywhere from 3.0ghz - 3.6ghz.
I was looking at the following memory for the job:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231148

That memory should be able to handle 400mhz at 4-4-4-12 right? If not what else should i be looking at? I have my mind set on 2x2gb sticks.

Thank you!

This is the G.Skill RAM I have, I think it's much better than the one you chose, and for the same price!

With this ram it is RATED to go up to 500Mhz, should you want to push past 400. I'd get what I got (which is why i did )

Or take the 800 version of those for $85, which are the ones I have, which can hit 1066 fine enough, and can run their rated 800 quite well .

They use the same chips as their faster cousins as well.

The only thing going for your choice is that they come at CAS4 - however, note the default voltage. They've been pushed up to 2.0-2.1 from 1.8, and thus the lower timings are no real advantage, as you can probably easily get to CAS4 on the 800-PQs with a voltage bump, and the 1066-PQs are at a higher speed with the same voltage. Speed > timings.

Thanks guys, those details slipped my eye! Omsion i like the ones you're using, the extra voltage i get should give me a bit more OCing room to play around with. Quick question, what are your timings like at 400-450mhz?

At stock...haven't messed with them, as I think they're good enough as is, lol

stick with the ddr2-800 cas 4 memory... with a 9x multi and 400fsb that puts the cpu at 3.6ghz with the ram on the 1:1 ratio ram will be good. in order to match the memory bandwidth of ddr2-800 cas4 you need to run ddr2-1000 cas5 at least.

Well i was going to get the cas5 ones, and simply OC them to cas4. They do require less voltages than the cas5 ones, so i don't think it would be a problem. Plus they're cheaper.

What Evilsizer is true. I have the 2x2GB (PC8000) set and I was not successful in tightening the timings to CAS4. However the added speed makes up for the higher CAS 5 timing in number crunching. I also went with the PC8000 because in case I want to go with a Penryn quad with low multiplier in the future I will be set with this RAM.

However if you do not plan to go much over PC6400 speeds I would go with the CAS 4 PC6400.

You're correct sir, the added 200MHz bandwidth makes up for the slightly slower timing. Only in a very latency sensitive benchmark would you see otherwise.

Ok guys, thanks! I ended up going with:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231148

cas4 pc6400, as i do not plan to go much above 400mhz.

I'm stumbling in this thread a bit late, but good choice with the RAM. With a Q6600 there is really no point to get anything other than DDR2-800 because of its 9x multiplier like has already been mentioned. Running the RAM faster with the divider won't provide any tangible performance advantage.
