Nehalem details from HKEPC (translated)

I'm eagerly looking forward to Nehalem but theres a couple of points I grabbed from that article that shocked me. There will be two sockets: LGA1366 and LGA1160. 1366 will be for High-End Platforms and 1160 will be for Performance Platforms (probably the only one most of us can afford). The 1366 will get 2 full x16 PCIe support and the 1160 will have only 1x16 or 2x8 support. WTF?!

I need to take another look and read it more closely. I find it hard to believe the LGA1160 parts won't support 2x16 PCIe.

Also I'd like to add, even with the huge die size, they may clock well simply because of the power efficiency Nehalem will bring to the table. The article says it will be 30% more efficient than Penryn! the 130watt and 95watt TDP makes me wonder though....

I hope DDR3 prices will be low by that time havendale is out or they might see people go for quads with DDR2 instead, i surely would.

Agreed, a bloomsfield setup will accomidate up to 6 sticks of DDR3 memory.

Thats a great point. Otherwise a High End Intel system will be a little out of most of our price ranges. I'll definitely go with an LGA1160 system. I'm sure they will perform just fine. I'm a little worried about the PCI Express implementation though. I would like to do a Crossfire setup in my next major build with 2x16 slots.

i am not being mean here when i say this. you guys do understand how that works with DDR memory? current LGA775 doesnt need 2 sticks to work, it has 2 channels though. you can run one stick of ram and have the computer work all though in single channle. they add 1 more channle to allow for more memory and more bandwidth to the cpu. in no way does going from 2 channel to 3 mean you have to have each channle popluated. i didnt know that DDR3=RDRAM or 32/72 pinn simms.

Kits of 3xDDR3 sticks will be expensive at today's prices. I just hope I can get a 6GB kit for $130 one day.

honestly though, for real world application would it even be worth the upgrade expense?

I wish Intel would decide to throw out the LGA1160 and just port it to 1366. I'm going to have one hell of a hard time deciding which one to go with

Well they described them as being 'tri-channel' so I was lead to believe you would achieve the best performance using three sticks. I'm sure you can use 1 stick instead of the 6 possible in a gainstowne setup, but my natural assumption was that if you had that kind of money you'd use all 6 DIMMs. I will choose my words more carefully next time

I also agree with what reclaimer122 said because when LGA1160 and 1366 comes out you'll basically have to decide between medium/high performance and ultra high performance, whereas on the 775 socket you could use the best quad cores and best CPU's intel had to offer.

The socket 1366 might be released and can only use 500+$ CPU's, obviously you probably wouldn't want to get this right away. But down the line when CPU's become more cost effective with the higher end socket/mobo people that chose the 1160 socket to start will be in a bad position. That is all speculation by me, but by the way they are making it sound, the higher end (1366) socket is going to cost some serious money when it comes out.

o ok, thats different then Shig, some do like to upgrade in stages. as just going by what you said would lead someone to think they need 3/6 dimms to make the system run. thats the only thing i was tring to clear up.

Tri-Channel DDR3...

Actually seeing it on paper makes me giggle inside.

Now we wait for prices to come down to $40 a gig of DDR3 LOL

I will be interested to see what performance benefits are achieved by putting PCIe on the CPU.
I cant see how PCIe slot will be connected directly to the CPU though, just like RAM is on the Nehalem. I guess some of the traces from the CPU will go directly to the graphics slot bypassing the "Northbridge" (its not really a northbridge anymore!)
