Thermalright 120 extreme - did I put fan on right? (pics)

I haven't gotten all the parts to start building the computer yet, but I did get the thermalright and the fan so I fiddled around with it trying to get it on right.

Two things i'm not sure about:

1. Is the fan supposed to be touching the metal like that?
2. Do I have the fan blowing air in the right direction? I can't remember If the logo side blows in air or out.

Sorry for the low res pics, all I have is a webcam.

It is hard to see, but do you have the rubber strips on the heatsink?

In the last picture, it would blow towards the camera.

Yea you can't really tell from those crappy pics but I did put the rubber strips on both sides. Their supposed to go on the side with the fan correct? And the fan is on backwards? How do you tell which way the air blows in/out?

Some fans will have little arrows on them, but generally airflow is in the direction of the sticker on the fan. That's how I figure it out!

the part which has no reinforcement is usually the side that should be facing you when you want to blow air into the heatsink

Ok, I put the fan on the right way. But the wires are touching the heatsink.. or doesn't that matter?

And the fan to supposed to pressed up against the thermaltake and touching it right? And the clamps hold the fan against it?

Touching the heatsink? They should be in the holes of the fan

Yes, it will be pressed firmly up. Let me get some nice pics for you

-Note that the fans are blowing AWAY from the camera, towards the wall

-That is how the clips look

IMO the easiest way to check which way the fan blows is to look at the blades. The concave part is the way the air will blow.

Theres a powered up computer in the background. Just plug the fan in, and use your hands to feel which way the air blows. Watch your fingers though, fans are evil in plastic form.

forgive me for going off topic for a quick second.

are all 120x38mm fans deathly loud like deltas? i thought the advantage of 38mm vs 25mm thickness was akin to a 120mm fan vs 80mm fan. more airflow with lesser RPM for less noise.

Most fans can be turned down even at 120x38mm to 5-7V, and some of the 100-130CFM models are (relatively) quiet even at 12V. Most of the 38mm-thick fans will still push a decent amount of air (with higher air pressure due to the fan's thickness) at lower voltages/RPM, so they can be useful for running under a fan controller while getting good airflow. I like Panoflo UH-speed fans and SD's as they're fairly quiet when undervolted but not unbearably-loud at 12V. They don't push as much air as the higher CFM Deltas or Rotron fans though, so it's a trade-off.

When you get to 180+CFM 38mm-thick fans you're going to hear some noise, but you'll generally get better airflow and pressure vs a comparable 25mm-thick fan.

Off topic here, but most fans have arrows to show which way the blades turn and the way the air flows.

2 Fans doesn't show an improvement if you have good airflow in your case... In my P180, I have my TRUE blowing directly out the back of the case which blows it to the exhaust fan.

I have come to find out that the best fan for those is this--
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835226013

I use one of those fans on mine, it's totally silent, I hear the Antec TriCool fans on low over that thing when it's pushing ~90CFM at 100%. And just as a word of advice, make sure you put those thin rubber strips where the fan will make contact with the heatsink, otherwise you will hear a good vibration noise every now and again.

As I had just posted in another thread about you recommending this fan.

ABSOLUTELY NOT. DO NOT BUY SILENX

SilenX fans are known to blatantly LIE about their CFM/noise ratio and are not to be trusted. DO NOT BUY SILENX

I hope the next batch of thermalright sinks have fans already on them.

I just hate having to buy extra fans and use their terrible clips.
