Vista killed my gaming

Hello just upgraded to vista for no reason at all just too see crysis in DX10, it didnt run well, lol.

Anyways ever since ive done this i have realised a major major performance hit on my gaming no matter game a play, i have like 60 procceses running, is that bad? i can get about 40 FPS in CoD4 at 1920x1200 8xAA(done through nvidia tool) and everything else set too high, apart from model detail and another option(they dont go any higher for some reason ) but when i had XP i was getting at least 55FPS.

I know this sounds like its running still fine but games such as crysis wont get anymore than 25FPS on low graphics no AA 800x600, same with bioshock except that just go's a FPD(Frame Per Day), and also GTA only runs at 35FPS and my computer used to be able to destroy that lol.

anyways to the point is there any magic way i can downgrade to XP without having to format my PC(too much stuff to backup) if not is there a tweak tht i can do to practically make XP vista without lossing the desktop visual Areo thing. Thanks

Areo Cooling Extreme Engine SII
Nforce 590Sli MOBO
AMD 6000+ 3.2Ghz (stock heatsink)
4GB Ocz DDR2 800Mhz
Nvidia Geforce 9600GT (heatsink off the palit version, quiet and cool)

Nec 20x DVD-RW x2

cod 4 is one of the few games that plays better ion vista than xp for me. most games are on par now anyway.

also why would you run cod 4 at that res with 8xAA its needeless, try 2x thats all you need anyway at that res and some people dont even need that.

Vista didn't kill your gaming experiance. If it did, then you already had one foot in the grave. Your system seems fine, but i think even with XP if your expecting high resolution with high AA your setting yourself up for a big let down. Try using different drivers. Are you using the 64 bit version? Did you use Vlite or any of that garbage?

Sorry gib, it isn't Vista's fault. I've been running VistaU32, and now U64, for well over a year now, without jacking around with services or anything like that. My personal box is mostly for gaming and I'm very happy with it. I play Crysis64 at 1680X1050 high/very high settings and it looks and plays great.

I agree with some of the above posts, Vista is not the cause of poor performance. While it's true and documented that Vista is SLIGHTLY slower at gaming than XP, it's really not a huge difference. I've been using XP and XP x64 for years until I just made the switch to Vista 64 about 2 months ago and my gaming experience hasn't changed at all.

Is there a problem with vLite? Does using it for an install cause more issues than it helps? With storage space as cheap as it is I wouldn't use it for disk space reasons but I would consider it to keep useless extra junk from being installed in the first place. Maybe some of those things that can be removed actually shouldn't be though?

nah vista didnt kill it, your hardware did haha, upgrade your gfx card its kinda... low-mid ranged you'll see more speed from an 8800 which is like $30 more if that.

Yes and yes

If you like using it, by all means feel free to. I have yet to make a successful nLited OS and I have not tried Vlite.

Perhpas it is because I tried doing the updates but I always ran into problems. Either drivers not installing properly, update not functinoing. Or just random crashes a month or so down the road.

64-bit Vista is fine, never a problem here...

20%? Yeah, 20% when viewing a benchmark...

XP 64-bit was god awful... The Vista 64-bit absolutely makes the XP x64 look bad, and if there ever was an OS that had no driver or app support, it was XP x64.

@OP-
The 9600GT is not a card known for muscle, so I wouldn't expect to see great resolutions with AA, Details, Shadows, Shaders, etc, Maxed... With 4Gb of RAM you should be able to handle all those processes with no problem. I noticed you didn't say how much RAM the system was using during gameplay. If you wanted to stop some of it, just disable Aero...

Control Panel>Personalization>Window Color and Appearance>Open classic appearance......

I made one nLite install CD which didn't seem to work right. I took out too much stuff I think. I made another just taking out useless MS extras such as games and other accessories and left all items marked red in nLite, which means it is advised not to remove them unless you're sure, even if I didn't need them (AGP related bits for example) and probably didn't take out much if anything else. I also didn't try to slipstream any drivers into it and made it from a full slipstreamed SP2 disk. It has worked fine.

Beat me to it.

Oh, I think there was some mistake above, I was not asking if Vista X64 was being used and implying that it was the problem. In fact I really don't recommend Vista, unless you are going to use the 64 bit version.

There's nothing wrong with XP x64. I used it for over a year with no issues at all before recently changing over to Vista 64. There were driver issues with XP x64 when it was first released but those problems were resolved LONG ago. It's quite stable and fast now, certainly faster than Vista 64, however since I know MS is going to stop support of XP soon, I went ahead and made the change to Vista 64. Both work just fine.
