VM advice

Anyone know of a VM app (preferably open source) that can support more than 2 processors per virtual machine? I want to try setting up SMP F@H client on a VM but are very limited with RAM and running Win XP-32 as a host OS.

Thanks in advance.

1st - I don't have your VM answer.
2nd -How much memory do you have?

I only have 2GB of RAM running XP-32, but this is for 8-core systems. At the moment I'm only running 3 Windows SMP clients on each.

Here is one from MS. I am sure there are others, but this should work for you.

you will need at least 256(512 recomended) just to run windows via VM. so you could, in theory, run 3 VMs at the same time. Now how well it will work while folding...

I'll look into the MS app but I was under the impression it was limited to only 1 processor per VM.

So, I'm guessing, you have a quad? Maybe run two VM's with VMware Server, it's free...points/production is favorable.

Not exactly, I have three dual quads currently folding along with a smattering of other systems.

On the folding Forum there is a thread->here that discusses folding with eight core machines; it may have some solutions that might fit your circumstances.

/edit leelegend and maybe others that are running dual-quad Mac Pro's may have some useful advice.

Thanks for the link but that thread focuses on an old 8-way server and doesn't mention VMs with F@H.

you could run 4 fah6 -smp VM's that should distribute 2cores per VM thus using 8cores up

Yes, that's an ideal setup but I'm limited to only 2GB of RAM and the host OS is 32-bit.

32 bit Host o/s is o.k. If you are limited to 2gb RAM, then that's going to be a problem, which ever way you choose.

I would think that there would be a "folding only" os that only runs folding. Nothing else. No GUI, no browser, just folding. Why don't we have this?

And more on topic, why are you limited to 2 gigs? Is that all that is on there, or is that all the board has slots for? If you can upgrade, a 2 gig stick of ddr2 is only $45. IF you don't want to spend the money, then you may not be able to take full advantage of your cores.Unless we do have a barebones os for you to load.

An old school DOS interface that only has the ability to run folding. Maybe? Can it be done? Sounds like a challange.

Not for me, but maybe someone here has the skill...

and desire...

and time.

There is...notfreds. Notfred resides over on TechReport Forums; notfred and others very helpful with questions concerning the various methods of folding, with notfreds folding "appliances".

There used to be a boot disk(I believe david either created it or helped to) that just had a few basic commands and then just ran the client totally from memory. A linux command line could probably be done if a guru had the time and interest.
Arkaine23 created the overclockix disks but they had a GUI interface and some cool software too.
