FRUSTERATING PROBLEM WITH QUAKE 4 AND DOOM 3

Hey guys, I decided to post on here because the guys at ID soft are no help what so ever, and people on these forums have always been helpful and responsive.
I've been having this same problem with both ID games, doom 3 and quake 4, for a long time, even after upgrading to the AMAZING hardware that I now I have. The problem with both games is ....i cant max out the settings, I mean I KNOW my pc can handle it, cause the games are pretty old, and I can play newer games liked COD4, Crysis, UT3, and such, at max (except of crysis, big surprise lol).
Anyway, both games wont save the settings I choose. As soon as I restart to apply them, its back to default. I tried EVERYTHING, making my own .cfg files, like many have recommended, and even making the .cfg read-only. Nothing seems to work. Can anyone help me out here? Am i missing something?

Thanks,

Chris

P.S. I attacthed my dxdiag file incase anyone is interested.

This may sound silly, but its just a thought. The .cfg files aren't set to read only are they?

Are you using dual displays? That would cause a severe fps drop, although wouldn't affect settings not being saved.

Nope, just using a single nice sceptre dvi lcd display.
And no the .cfg's are not set to read only.
Latest patches are a go as well.
And yes the mobo is an Abit P35

You have admin privileges in windows? If not, maybe you need them for the .cfg's to be updated.

I can't play quake4 because of some libraries missing with VC++ even when I install them, it won't let me
