...well, slightly. I don't exactly have massive production capabilities but over the next week I will be folding 24/7 to see how it goes. I have managed to crack 1,000 PPD the last couple days and also 60,000 points. Roll on page 8...

On a sidenote, I could use some more information as to whether to get some new hardware. As I live at home with parents, farms are out of the question - I've only got 1 computer to play with. The specs are as follows:

380W PSU
Asus M2N4-SLI (Socket AM2)
AMD Athlon X2 64 5600+ @ 2.8GHz
2x 1GB Corsair 800Mhz RAM
Ati Radeon X1950 Pro 512MB GDDR3 PCI-E

It works nicely for my gaming needs, which is what I bought it for. But I'm wondering if I can use it to specialise a little more for folding, which seems to be a bottomless pit as far as hardware goes. I've tried overclocking my CPU but my motherboard doesn't do it very well and my PSU DEFINATELY didn't like it, so they're out for the time being.

The only other consideration I had was to upgrade the CPU to a Phenom. No doubt I will need a PSU as well, but if it gives me a large boost in PPD, then I would be prepared to do that. Also, if anyone wanted my old X2, then I would be happy to give it away to another member of the team.

Not sure if that mobo will work with a phenom... according to the asus website its not supported. Thats the problems I ran into. My opty dual core 1218 works fine for my gaming (WOW) and folding. But I wanted faster, so I picked up a used c2d and gigabyte board for an solution in the mean time till I can afford a quad. By then hopefully the phenom will be performing better and it will compete with the c2q.

That being said comparing the c2d e6600 at stock speed and my opty at 2.99 the c2d seems to be about 20% faster folding.

You can pickup some good deals on used C2D's or you can buy a lower end c2d such as like an E4500... either way it blows AMD out of the water currently.

If you are going for 24/7 operations, Run the SMP client,\

If you are not going to game, go with 2 VMWare & install Ubuntu into those VMWares.
& run 2 SMP clients.

How much will that give compared to just running SMP in win XP? I'm only pushing about 700PPD with my setup, and I would like to get more out of it if possible...

I wouldn't change anything until and unless you're ready to step up to a Phenom or C2D of E6600 or better.

You will be gaming/etc., so 2VM's are out.

I wouldn't fold on a graphics card FAH client, since it's a gaming rig.

If you can fold 24/7, great. If not, do what you enjoy folding wise, and keep that as your priority.

See, I can get "deep", also - at least 3 millimeters! :D :D :D

I wouldn't trust the Asus website to be up to date...when I bought my components, the only Quad cores were Intel chips costing ridiculous amounts, the technology was brand new and the AMD Phenom didn't exist yet. Since the place I purchase from has given me excellent advice on everything I've bought from there (quite a lot) - they are likely to know if it'll work. I will ask them. (They are the kind of place which would rather tell you not to buy something if it's not useful).

And Adak...I think you were touching four millimetres there! (Are you accusing my signature of being deep? Oh well, at least it wasn't me that created it - my blogs on these matters tend to be slightly insane).
