Hi Guys,

I'm looking to put together a new desktop as my current PC went down the tubes, the motherboard is toast, and since I'm still running 939 it's time for an upgrade.

I mainly will be using this computer for Photoshop/Web Design, Internet Surfing, Listening to Music, IM pretty much all at the same time. Lots of multi tasking.

I already have this:

Antec Full Tower
Mad Dog 500watt PSU (will eventually upgrade after initial build)
2-160GB SATA Maxtor drives (storage)
Samsung Dual Layer SATA Burner (brand new)
Geforce 7600GT 256mb (may upgrade later)
Floppy

This was what I was looking at off of Newegg:

Q6600

GIGABYTE P35

GSKILL Ram

Vista Ultimate 64bit

Comes out to $600 and some change. I thought about getting a 74GB raptor for OS, but their $140, worth it?

Thanks for all your guys help, I wont be able to respond much today as I have work starting in an hour and I have a pool league tonight, but I'll try to get back to your posts ASAP.

Thanks again!

Everything looks pretty good to me, As far as going with a Raptor, Not worth it to me, However many do go with them and seem to think they are worth the cash so that really is one of those " In the eye of the beholder" deals.

If you are getting a raptor just be careful...there is an issue with raptors, vista and intel chipsets. I had the problem with an Abit...so not sure if it was the mobo or chipset.

If you are looking for a hard drive you might look at new western digital 640gb VWD6400AAKS or something similar. Otherwise your pc looks alright except for that psu.

Hope you don't plan on overclocking that quad on a cheapo DS3L, might make for some melting PCB. Not sure about your PSU either, make sure its got enough amps for your system load.

I would re-use your current OS and upgrade your PSU before doing anything else. The last thing you want is for it to kill your new set-up. Are you sure it wasn't the cause of your current system failure?

I again agree with blazed, that is a week board for quads. I am really liking the P5K Pro for ~$130. You could save a few bucks by dropping to PC6400 as you are not going to bee running 500Mhz FSB on a Q6600.

Thanks for all your responses guys.

Ok I've decided no on the Raptor. I'm just going to run the OS and all programs off one of my 160GB drives, then use the extra for storage and get another 500-750GB drive in the next month or so for additional storage.

As far as the PSU, I know that wasn't the cause of my problems. I work for a Web design company that is part of a long running computer repair place in my area and the guys looked it over for me. One ram slot went bad causing my computer to go into BSOD craze mode and then I lost 2 SATA ports so I couldn't hook everything up, just died on me.

Though what PSU should I be looking at? I'm not sure if I'm going to get one this order, but within the next month or so, my wallet can't take that huge of a hit right now.

I'm not re-using my old copy of Windows because it's a long story, but regardless I'm just going to get a new copy.

I don't plan on overclocking, if I do it wouldn't be anything more than like a 10% OC. But I probably won't OC this rig at all.

I'll drop the RAM speed down to save some cash to put towards other things.

Thanks again!

Ok I've decided that I'm going to pick up a PSU aswell because I don't want to go through the hassle of putting the system together and then having to re-hook everything back up. I want to keep my case clean inside so that I get better airflow and it's not just a tangled mess.

How about this PSU?

Seems like a good deal. Would it support this system with like a newer Nvadia card, like a 8800? I may wanna pick one up in alittle while.

Remember I'm not going to be doing much if at all OC'in.

I'm just saying screw it and drop the cash on a more expensive Corsair, after looking at their deals.

That should carry me into next build, and more than handle this rig and a new graphics card when I decide to get one.

Probably will order this setup sometime tomorrow unless I'm steering in a different direction.

Stick with the Corsair PSU it's got plenty of room to upgrade, and will probably last you two builds at least. Modular is nice, but better quality outweighs modular.

Ok I think I'm going to go ahead and just order all this stuff tonight when I get home from work. So hopefully I can get working on putting this system together next weekend. I can't wait!

Thanks for your guys help, I'm sure I'll be back asking more questions soon.

EDIT

Well I decided to just got ahead and order everything now, I can't wait till it gets here :) I added a ARCTIC Freezer 7 to the order aswell.
