If you're one of the people (such as myself) who got mislead into thinking that the 'Certified for Windows Vista' sticker found on the box of your new USB WiFi adapter meant that it was compatible with both the 32bit and 64bit platforms of Vista, then fret no more as my guide should hopefully get you successfully connected to the Internet in next to no time.

Note: This guide is also viable for those who are looking to use their current USB WiFi adapter on Vista x64 but don't have a compatible driver.

So let's get on to it, shall we?

First of, preparation...

Preparation:
• Download the latest driver for 802.11g on the RaLink website: RaLink Download.

• Run the executable after download.

----------

•After installation of the files, head to 'Device Manager' and insert the USB wifi adapter.

•It should come up with 'Found New Hardware', ignore this and press cancel.

•Now head back to 'Device Manager' and you should see either 'unknown device', '802.11g adapter' (with a yellow exclamation point) or you should see it under the 'Network Adapter' tree.

•Right Click the device and select properties > Driver (tab) and select 'Update Driver'.

•Click 'Browse my computer for driver software' > 'Let me pick from a list of device drivers...'.

•Scroll down the left window until you find 'RaLink Technology Corp' then on the right window select '802.11g USB 2.0 Stick'.

•Click 'Have Disk', on the pop-up select browse and then select the folder where the drivers were extracted to: (C:/program files (x86) RALINK/ RT7x Wireless Lan Card/Driver - default), then select '7364' or the most recent one and press 'open' then 'OK' then press 'Next' on the main window.

•A message should appear warning about incompatibility issues, go ahead and ignore this and press 'yes', you should now see and installation window and hopefully if all things work out it should come up with a message of successful installation.

The last step is to configure the connection in WLAN autoconfig by selecting 'Network and Sharing Center' from the control Panel and it should be pretty straightforward.

After establishing a successful connection, do the following to prevent possible lag spikes:

1.Go into 'Network and Sharing Center' and click 'View Status' of your current connection.
2.Click 'Wireless Properties', and uncheck 'connect to a more preferred network if available'.
3.Then click 'properties' and uncheck 'Internet protocol version 6'.
4.Everything should be running perfectly so press 'close' and enjoy.

Final Notes:
•Always have the latest RaLink driver - this is a must as not having the latest driver installed could affect Internet speeds.

•If you're suffering from lag issues try using these programs: 'WLANOptimizer' and 'Vista Anti-Lag'.

•This guide is intended for the 802.11g standard however an 802.11n driver is also available on the RaLink site.

Well there you go, your internet should be up and running now so go ahead and enjoy your cruise on the information superhighway.

Cheers,
NombreAleatorio.
