ipod touch or eee

I'm looking for a small, cheap (under $350) solution for getting wi-fi. The eee and the 8GB ipod touch. What do you guys recommend, It's cool that the ipod can fit in my pocket, has more out of the box memory, and , lets face it, looks cooler. But the eee is a full fledged laptop, with ubuntu it's pretty cool.

Depends on what you want out of it. I bought my Touch for that specific reason as well. It works very well for simple browsing but keep in mind it is not a full fledged PC. You may run into trouble with some sites due to the plug-in support. I have come across a couple but for my uses it wasn't a big deal, the form factor is more important.(I think it was shockwave but I am not sure)

is there any way to do an IM with the touch
The sites I visit are OCForum's, Newegg, Adultswim.com, woot, yahoomail, and engadget, do these work very well for you?

I haven't tried adultswim but the rest are fine. If I remember I'll try it when I get home in the mourning, I am work right now.

To get IM you will probably need to jailbreak it. It is a very simple process with pretty much zero chance of bricking it, I have yet to see a case. A quick google search shows IM apps available but I have no idea how well they work.

To my knowledge there are several IM programs out for the iPhone & Touch, typing is pretty easy but probably slower than on the EEE. It's a pretty tough call though, the size, design, and interface are the best parts about the Touch, while you're probably going to get a more enjoyable web browsing and IMing experience with a proper keyboard and the option of a mouse.

That said, the lure of Apple advertising is pretty impossible to resist, and the number of applications on the iPhone OS is growing daily. Check out hackint0sh.org for any info you need.

If your not going to use the mp3-player function of the Ipod touch then I wouldnt go for it. Webbrowsing is nice, but there is a lot that you cant do.

You cant watch web based movies (except youtube) because it cant use java and stuff like that.

When you look for the weather, its a normal picture and the clouds arnt moving.

The only way to connect to a wifi network is through normal password. Its not possible to install licence files to connect (which I would need if I want to brows the internet on school).

The eee pc... I have no experience with it. except Ive heared that the screen is really small to run windows.

Good luck choosing

You might want to look into the Nokia Internet Tablets. I don't know much about them but I have seen them pretty often in that price range but don't have a clue as to the performance of them.

Archos has a few options. They make PMPs and are actually pretty nice. The only 2 that have wifi I think are the 605 (Ipod touch size) and the 705 (7" screen, kind of large to fit in your pocket). Both have an Opera powered browser and support flash and java (the keyboard is similar to the touch). I was able to get the 605 80gb version for about the same as a 4gb Ipod touch, but you could get a 4gb flash memory based one that takes SD cards for added memory. But if you look, the older generation (604/704) might be on ebay.

The only downside to the Archos PMPs is the range is a little low and, I never thought I'd say this, but the resolution is a little high (800x480 on both models, and that rez on a 4.3" screen is small).

But if you are looking for a small cheap internet device, the eee 701 or one of the other small cheap laptops are probably better, more expandable and customizable.
